the best news! Saints without a first rounder take a major piece off the board.

Saints have the 29th pick that they got from Denver (who acquired it from Miami in the Chubb trade).RustinFields wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 11:42 amthe best news! Saints without a first rounder take a major piece off the board.

oops! Still the point mostly stands.
Saints felt like MAYBE they were a little bit of a dark horse candidate to trade up with us because they've done crazy trade ups before (davenport) and their cap situation would make a rookie QB attractive.
But dropping down to 29 would have been a bit anti-climactic.

I'm trying to figure out what this means for Mike Thomas. If they trade him I think they are on the hook for $26m?

I like Carr. To me it was mystifying how things went for the Raider last year.
It does look like AARon to the Jet. Fun times.

I would be shocked if anyone is trading for Thomas and that deal. I'd also be shocked if they kept him. The way they structured the deal last month was the create an early decision on more guarantees, while allowing a lower initial 2023 cut number, and then still using the post June 1 cut provision. It seemed very certain that's where things were headed.crueltyabc wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 2:11 pm I'm trying to figure out what this means for Mike Thomas. March 17 is the "trigger date".. If he's not cut by then, his 2024 bonuses guarantee. So he'd be untradable at that point and then also carry a huge dead cap hit that even Loomis would struggle to get around.
Could he be traded before March 17? Doubtful. Still would create a complicated timing issue for Loomis as his 2024+ dead cap charges would accelerate.
So that just leaves the narrow possibility they keep him, guaranteeing 31M next year in the process. Wow, if that comes to pass.

Ok so you're saying they're just holding on to the slim possibility of a trade, but will most likely announce the cut at the last minute before the new league year on March 17The Cooler King wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 2:30 pmI would be shocked if anyone is trading for Thomas and that deal. The team that acquires him would owe him what? I thought base salary only? $1.2m this year and $18m next year seems like a good deal though he'd obv have to pass a physical

Yea, so basically he was owed about 32M over next two years in new money (roughly equal split in 23/24). And that structure was changed to 1M and 31M, but with the 31M guarantee coming 3/17/2023.crueltyabc wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 2:43 pmOk so you're saying they're just holding on to the slim possibility of a trade, but will most likely announce the cut at the last minute before the new league year on March 17The Cooler King wrote: ↑Mon Mar 06, 2023 2:30 pm

This article covers it pretty well:

Trade still would be tough - more so to find a buyer who wants to guarantee 2/31 (IMO at least), but it also creates some challenges for Loomis to trade him before June 1. I guess there's a slim chance for a post June 1 trade. But that's a lot now to guarantee for Loomis.
We'll see.

Contract details:
The New Orleans Saints and Derek Carr have agreed to a four-year, $150 million contract that includes $100 million in total guarantees, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Monday morning, per sources informed of the situation.
...
Carr will get $70 million effectively fully guaranteed with $60 million due at signing and another $10 million in Year 3 vesting after Year 1, per Rapoport and Garafolo. Carr's new contract also will include a no-trade clause, Garafolo reported, just as his most recent deal with the Raiders had.

I don't think Rodgers is going anywhere...

My mother's love was inexplicably linked to kickball.

gawd i hope erin stays with the pack. they would have 50 mil (?) tied up between love and erin. all the turmoil he creates and cap hell they will be in. plus i don't want them having extra firsts. then when we beat their assess next year it will be doubly fine..

You would think Garafolo would have at least gotten Carr's first name right.
