5.Jalen Carter - a 3 tech engine for the D

OT Georgia

37.Henry To'oTo'o - more athletic LB
LB Alabama

52.Gervon Dexter - Another DT to move Justin Jones to a rotational piece

the nfl mock draft database is completely nuts and worthless. teams trading firsts for sixths etc. i think i ended up with every pick next year. and still had 20 picks this year. i got anderson at 7 too...

The player rankings on all the sites are still off. NFL draft season is just starting and you will start to see some players making big jumps as more information starts to come out on guys. Really you have to take everything with a grain of salt until after the combine, player rankings will be much more dialed in after it. I am just doing these to get a gauge on where guys are going and who is moving up. Also, free agency will change the needs of just about every team so you are not going to get a really good mock draft until late next month.

But yes the NFLMDDB trade offers are all out of whack...but they do a pretty good job of accepting realistic offers once you decline the initial offer and counter.

Today's trade partner was with ATL, was able to trade #1 for 8, 44, 75, 133, plus a 1st and 3rd in 2024. I am starting to lock down the same guys in rounds on the differents sites!

i think if we dropped to eleven i would like to get the tcu reciever, if he's there. some mocks have him lasting awhile. cincy went with jamar and it really made the difference for burrow. maybe thats the same recipe fields needs. a stud number one receiver.

That's what I usually do in that situation.
This was unusual, in that PFF dropped Murphy all the way to 19, creating an opportunity that isn't there on other boards and I couldn't pass.
I'm not sure if that's reasonable, or the same sort of nonsense as their Jarrett Patterson ranking...

I dunno. I'm not convinced Patterson is a top 100 player either. (Tho, I don't think he misses it by much.)

Sure, it's possible he might miss by a little.
(I wouldn't have taken him at 103 if I thought it was ridiculous. )
But, barring unexpected Combine flop, PFF's 146 or TDN's 202 are pretty hard to swallow.

I'll give you that TDN is pretty low. I don't think he's a late Day 3 guy who might go undrafted.

I do think any rating that has him above, say, 85 is inflated, though. To me he's a C-only prospect who projects to a starter-caliber (which, admittedly, a step up from status quo on the Bears, yes) that may, due to his physical limitations, top out as a borderline starter that you're always looking to replace. I'm willing to take that chance on a Day 3 pick, but less inclined to do so any time in Day 2. YMMV.

Not sure where I saw it but I saw a mock with us trading down twice and getting. Had us trading with the Colts and the Panthers. Getting a 1st and 3rd from the colts next year as well.

1. Bryan Breese
2. Dawand Jones (2nd)
3. John Michael Schmitz (2nd)
4. Cody Mauch (2nd)

I would not be upset about this. Really love the emphasis on the O-Line.

Decided to do a trade I've never done before - just trade down to 2, nothing else, with the intent of guaranteeing an elite DL.
Not necessarily my favorite, but wanted something different. And it's not a bad outcome.
2R3s and a R4, which is just slightly richer than the Bears 2-->3 for Mitchy deal, which makes sense.

TRADE Recap

Houston Receives:
2023: Round 1, Pick 1
Chicago Receives:
2023: Round 1, Pick 2
2023: Round 3, Pick 65
2023: Round 3, Pick 73
2023: Round 4, Pick 104

Tampa Bay Receives:
2023: Round 5, Pick 150
Chicago Receives:
2023: Round 5, Pick 155
2023: Round 6, Pick 196
2023: Round 7, Pick 232

My Selections
2 Jalen Carter 3T | Georgia Georgia TRADE
53 Keeanu Benton 1T | Wisconsin Wisconsin
64 Andre Carter RDE | Army Army
65 Rashee Rice WR | SMU SMU TRADE
73 Joe Tippmann C/G | Wisconsin Wisconsin TRADE
103 Jammie Robinson FS | Florida State Florida State
104 Hendon Hooker QB | Tennessee Tennessee TRADE
133 Mike Morris LDE | Michigan Michigan
137 Andrei Iosivas WR | Princeton Princeton
155 Wanya Morris OT | Oklahoma Oklahoma TRADE
196 Cameron Latu TE | Alabama Alabama TRADE
220 Anfernee Orji LB | Vanderbilt Vanderbilt
232 P.J. Mustipher 1T | Penn State Penn State TRADE

Penciling in a FA RT, CB, and Montgomery back, as usual.
Didn't get Patterson, as he went much higher than his ranking. I prefer Tippmann at G, but a little unsure in this scenario.
Besides a second IOL, hit all the other keys, except for a high end WLB.

I'm just reading this and thinking about how much the fan attention will fall on Rice as he'd be the biggest investment in a "weapon" added to the Bears in that offseason

Today's trade partner was with LV, I am starting to think this is the sweet spot for the Bears as they would also net a first next year. I am doing this assuming we are signing McGlinchey, Ngakwe, and Hargrave.

I don't know. How much weaponry are people expecting?

For the last few months we've heard nothing but "This isn't about 2022, this is for 2023" regarding Claypool.

2/3 WR spots are filled
1/1 TE spots are filled
1/2 HB spots are filled from the best rushing team in the league

I'm expecting 1-3 new starters (even if not 'new Bears') at OL
I'm expecting 2-4 new starters on DL
For weapons, I'm expecting 1 new starter, and I would put it 3rd on the list, after both lines

Well Twitter is expecting Tee Higgins but even among normal people I think there will be blowback if the Bears don't add at least a WR3 type in FA.

I expect:

- Really only 1 new WR, likely through the draft. Plus IMO Velus will almost be a new WR this season, if what we say toward the end of the season continues in trajectory. It WOULD be a bonus for yet another WR like Chark or if heaven blesses us with a big trade for a #1 type happens... but won't count on those things. I think Poles thinks enough of Pringle to bring him back cheap (which he can). I believe it is possible they're going to move on from Harry, Pringle and Pettis - and if so that could open up the door for two new guys plus Velus to go with Mooney Claypool and ESB.

- Kmet is solid but I believe they're definitely going to to back him up better. Not desperately but with a mid to low round pick to compete with Allen, Tonges and Wesco.

- I think we're going to see a new starting RB if Monty wants more than $5MM. I think they're going to be like "you're our man & we love you but you're not Josh Jacobs and you have to take Jamaal Williams money or we'll take him. "Team guys" cost $4-5MM not 7MM.

Snow finally in NE PA! A couple of inches so sitting here until I get off my ass to shovel later in the day. So here's my snow day mock. Assumptions are the Bears sign top 3T, a run stopping monster DT, and a top RT in free agency:

Trade 1:1 to Carolina for 1:9, #39, #98, 2024 1st, 2025 1st
Trade 1:9 to Chargers for 1:21, #53, #124, 2024 2nd
1:21 - Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa
Trade #39 to Cleveland for #42, #111
#42: Dalton Kincaid, TE, Utah
#53: Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington State
#54: Josh Downs, WR, North Carolina
#64: Andre Carter II, DE, Army
#93: Jaylon Jones, CB, Texas A & M
#103: Olusegun Oluwatimi, C, Michigan
#111: DeMarvion Overshown, LB, Texas
#124 Chase Brown, HB, Illiinois
#124 Jakorian Bennett, CB, Maryland
#137: Michael Wilson, WR, Stanfor
#127: Karl Brooks, DT, Bowling Green
#220: Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia

One I like from dawindycity.com:

Bears trade 1:1 for Falcons 1:8, #44, #75, 2024 1st, 2025 1st.

Bears select:

1:8 Quentin Johnson, WR, TCU
Rnd 2, #44. Steve Avilu, IOL, TCU
Rnd 2, #54 Dawand Jones, OT, OSU
Rnd 3 #64 Nick Herbig, DE, Wisc (although he seems more suited for a 3-4)
Rnd 3#75 Garrett Williams, CB, Syracuse
Rnd 4 #103 Karl Brooks, DE, Bowling Green (seems like he could play DT)
Rnd 4 #134 Dewayne McBride, RB, UAB (not fond of this pick)
Rnd 5 #137 Ivan Pace, LB, Cincy
Rnd 5 Brodric Martin, DT, Western Kentucky (a run stuffing DT)
Rnd 7, #220 Ronnie Bell, WR, Michigan
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

The simulators haven't really been very Combine updated (and I haven't really combed through the results very well yet, either), but 15 days away is about as far as I can go.
Do I get like a red chip or something for that?

major FA RT & CB
major FA 3T?
midlvl FA DE
major/minor FA WR

Trade Indy
1.1 for 1.4, 2.35, 3.79, 4.106, 2024 R2, 2025 R2
Trade Pitts
1.4 for 1.17, 2.49, 3.80, 2024 R2, 2025, R3

----- 0-1 yr starters -----------
1.17 DE Myles Murphy, Clemson
2.35 DE Tuli Tuipulotu, USC
2.49 C Joe Tippmann, Wisc
First Patterson crushes my dream by staying for a 5th year, then with his Combine.
2.54 G Cody Mauch, North Dakota
Adios to Whitehair, as our max Cody capacity = 1
3.64 1T Keeanu Benton, Wisc
3.79 WLB Owen Pappoe, Auburn
----- backups, most w hi upside -----------
3.80 WR Andrei Iosivas, Princeton
4.103 QB Hendon Hooker, Tennessee
If teams leave him alone this long, they don't deserve him
4.106 TE Zach Kuntz, Old Dominion
4.134 OT Wanya Morris, Oklahoma
5.137 HB Eric Gray, Oklahoma
5.150 TE Will Mallory, Miami
Yeah, a second pass-catching TE. They already have FB Blasingame, TE/FB Wesco, WR ESB as pure blocking specialists. Some skill position players who are good with the ball might be a nice change of pace.
7.220 3T/DE Dante Stills, West Virginia

Back to PFF, using the new trade

1.9 DE Tyree Wilson Texas Tech
2.54 C/G Joe Tippmann Wisconsin
2.61 G Cody Mauch North Dakota
I doubt he'll be here this late, but Wypler probably won't be gone and I'd go w him and Tippmann instead.
3.64 1T Keeanu Benton Wisconsin
4.103 TE Zach Kuntz Old Dominion
4.133 DE Yaya Diaby Louisville
5.137 OT Wanya Morris Oklahoma
Backup w great traits to develop
5.149 HB Eric Gray Oklahoma
Good receiver, a little PR experience, which they're now short on, unless they bring Pettis back :?
7.219 LB Anfernee Orji Vanderbilt
7.258 WR Antoine Greene North Carolina
PS body

Everything here worked out about as well as it possibly could.

With only a 2.61 from the trade, WLB is pretty hopeless, unless you sacrifice a lineman. And, as it is, I'm unsure that's enough DL help.
So now paying a WLB, which I hate, is almost a necessity.
And there's really nothing in the WR pipeline for next year when Claypool probably goes.

major FA: RT, CB, LB, 3T?
midlevel FA: DE

I like it, but your definitely taking some long shots.

But then again can't succeed if you're afraid to fail. We really need a RB if we don't re-sign Monty.

Another quick PFF from yesterday, based on our changing landscape

I felt like there was really no choice but to trade back, assuming no other major pickups (which may or may not be true, but I felt like it was silly to assume a particular get at this point).

1.9 for 1.24, 2.56, 3.88, 6.184, 6.201

1.24 OT Broderick Jones, Georgia
2.54 C/G Joe Tippmann, Wisconsin
2.56 DE Isaiah Foskey, Notre Dame
2.61 1T Keeanu Benton, Wisconsin
3.64 HB Zach Charbonnett, UCLA
Can't remember if Homer had been signed at this point. But I do remember there were no other options I liked at all and didn't want to build in another trade.
3.88 DE Dylan Horton, TCU
4.103 TE Zach Kuntz, Old Dominion
4.133 DE Yaya Diaby, Louisville
5.137 LB Henry To'o To'o, Alabama
5.149 OT Carter Warren, Pittsburgh
6.184 WR Ronnie Bell, Michigan
Got him in large part for the PR capability, which we really lack
6.201 TE Will Mallory, Miami
7.219 QB Malik Cunningham, Louisville
7.258 P Bryce Baringer, Michigan State
It's off most radars, but Gill wasn't good last year

In this scenario, Walker is playing mostly at 3T.
CB didn't get hit. And I'm concerned about the quality of the DL solutions (56, 61, 88, 137 don't scream "future stars"). I like their slot values, but may be lacking in impact players. And I'm dubious about my highest one (Foskey) actually lasting that long.

What I'm saying is - our current number of DL/OL needs is borderline overwhelming with the amount of picks we have to work with. I'm kinda discouraged. There isn't much left in the way of starters, but man, would picking up OBJ help a lot in terms of at least allowing for an impact player in Rl.

PFF wasn't a huge fan of this draft, but what do they know?

TRADES
1.9 (Christian Gonzalez) and 3.64 (Matt Bergeron) to Houston for 1.12, 2.33, and a 2024 third
4.103 (Jammie Robinson) to Denver for 4.108, 6.194, and two 2024 sevenths

1.12 - Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa. The Beastening Begins
2.33 - Adetomiwa Adebawore, 3T/DE, Northwestern. The Beastening continues.
2.54 - Joe Tippmann, C/G, Wisconsin. The Beastening goes on the offensive.
2.61 - Julius Brents, CB, Kansas St. A longer, skinnier take on The Beastening. But still a fucking problem.
4.108 - Tyler Steen, RT, Alabama. The Bea- Well, no. He's not an overwhelming force of nature. Just a really solid tackle with smarts and excellent athletic upside. Strikes me as a terrific investment in the fourth, and someone who might be able to step right in if we need him to.
4.133 - Moro Ojomo, DT, Texas. Normally, I'd pair a smaller DT with a big guy. But my two favorites were gone, and it was effectively down to Ojomo and Keondre Coburn. Give me the guy with significantly more juice, though Coburn would've been great, too.
5:137 - Zack Kuntz, TE, Old Dominion. The Beastening returns with Beastening V: The Tight Endening. Seriously ridiculous skills and athleticism.
6.194 - Chamarri Conner, S, VA Tech. Subtly, quietly an athletic beast in his own right. Should at least be a ST monster.
7.219 - Evan Hull, RB, Northwestern. Chase Brown went just before I picked Ojomo, and I wasn't going to ignore OT just to be sure I got my first realistic choice of RB. PFF hates Hull, but I like him well enough.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

If the Bears do this with their first three picks, I will be absolutely pumped.

If we're going to trade with LAC, I'd be sure to get Ekler in the deal. That's a long way to drop for a couple extra picks.
I will kill you if you cut me at the knees. You will drink with me when invited and stay til I say so. We only listen to American Music. I make men nervous with just my presence. I expect an apology if you hold. I throw linemen at QB's. Believe the Lore!
