Hmm. He’s a little on the short/stocky side. I guess he’s the new Spice Adams. This just keeps getting eerily similar.

Seems like a solid NT. If he can keep OL off the LB hell be doing his job

It’s no exaggeration to say Andrew Billings is playing the best football of his career. Not only is his 76.1 overall grade this season from Pro Football Focus a career-high, but both his 70.7 run defense grade and 68.1 pass rushing grade are career-highs individually.
...
From Week 5 onward, Billings is the 12th-highest graded DT in the NFL at 80.8. His run defense grade sits at 10th-highest among defensive tackles who have logged at least 100 snaps in this timeframe, while his pass rushing mark ranks 18th-highest under the same stipulation.
...
The 311lb defender also has the second-highest win rate vs. blockers at his position during this time frame (min. 10 pass-rushing snaps), beating his opposition 31.0% of the time.

My consensus bigboard for 2016 lists him as a NT and ranked #30 (the highest ranked DT that year). His slip to rd 4 was apparently one of the big surprises/mysteries that year.

He received a grade of a Year 1 Starter. He's 28 now. Why haven't I heard of him?

Well. Not a sexy, exciting pick. And I guess probably not a long-term fix, either. But still seems useful. You can give him starter snaps or backup share and either is ok, for the price.

Players generally don't generate a lot of stats from the 0-tech/1-tech position (unless you're a complete freak like Vita Vea or Haloti Ngata).Bears Whiskey Nut wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 2:37 pm He received a grade of a Year 1 Starter. He's 28 now. Why haven't I heard of him?

Starting NT or possibly rotational run-stuffer.
To go with Walker who'll likely also rotate between DE and 3T at times.
Not elite, but neither are terrible either.
2023 Preseason Downside prediction:
5-6 wins, never really healthy all season, a constant shuffling.
We're potentially in a position to draft in the Top 5 again, depending on the Carolina team, and probably have a low-teens (or better) pick ourselves.

Depth signing. Assuming only like Jones and Watt would return, in addition to draft pick(s) Poles had to bring in other depth/rotation.

Do the hand ringing members not realize Poles is going to hit D Line hard in the draft. Or should they sign 9 guys to cut 7 of them after the draft so we have more dead money going forward.

Exactly, we needed DT depth and he looks to be an improvement over what we had at NT last year.

Poles said "a DE that can kick inside" during his presser today.
I know it is early in free agency and the draft has not happened yet, that is why I said currently!!!

What do you guys make of the the 1 year deal? If he's a good player for the Bears it seems they're right back to having a hole to fill next year, but maybe that aligns with Poles long term strategy for building the club.

Flus and Poles are so full of crap. Here's what they said at the beginning of the month as to what they look for in defensive linemen:
And then they sign this guy: 6'1, 311 pounds. Basically, a bowling ball in pads. Not that I'm against the signing. In fact, I quite like it. For sure, he'll help at least around the goal line. Hell, maybe he can even stop the Hurts scrum. Knock them all down like bowling pins. lol But good God, how much further away can he be from their self-proclaimed attributes they're looking for?Bears general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus met with the media at the NFL Scouting Combine, where they discussed exactly what they’re looking for in a defensive lineman.
“Violence. Tenacity. Length,” said Poles.
“Big, long and fast,” said Eberflus.
