What is this? Last I heard was he wasn't in practice/drills - but was on the side & running well. I heard he was progressing well.
I certainly hope it doesn't turn into another Cohen situation where he isnt' healing but he's still being pencilled in as a contributor this season.

Articles based on an interview/podcast a couple days ago.
https://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/bears ... yone-field

And from pro football rumors:
Here is the latest receiver news from around the NFL:
Darnell Mooney missed the final five games of the Bears‘ 3-14 season due to an ankle injury. The three-year starter underwent surgery, with NFL.com reporting he had sustained ligament tears. But Mooney is on track to return to football work fairly soon. The contract-year wideout has a chance to be cleared before the end of Chicago’s offseason program, per Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Should that benchmark not be met, Mooney will be expected to be full-go by training camp. Mooney totaled 1,055 receiving yards in 2021 and will be expected to join D.J. Moore as Justin Fields‘ top targets this season, one that will potentially set him up for a lucrative extension or free agency accord.
I would say that doesn’t sound like he’s done at all.

I was worried about this, but got a pasting for suggesting the possibility.
Surely your ankle takes a pounding when boxing, that doesn’t seem like a logical next move.
Hope he’s alright, get well soon Darnell

This was the source. Not a bad interview at all. I like the ribbing between the Bears and Lions. He mentions his rehab pretty early on.

Not an encouraging comparison.Mooney said he had tightrope surgery. It's what former teammate N'Keal Harry had last summer after his ankle injury in practice, except Mooney's injury was more severe than Harry's.
Tightrope surgery involves an orthopedic implant that stabilizes the syndesmosis, a strong band of ligaments connecting the fibula and tibia.
Was Harry hindered by lingering impact?
Or was he just useless all on his own?

I've been privately worried about Mooney, just because he's a smaller guy and his body needs to be perfect for him to do what he does. Not that I think this report is conclusive in any way.
I've felt since Claypool was acquired that it's no way they're going to pay both of those guys unless one or both doesn't meet expectations. There's a reason they drafted Scott.

Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Did any of you actually listen to what Mooney said of his injury and recovery?

Biggest takeaway was the comment Mooney made in response to the question as to whether he had a payday coming up. He replied that "They [the Bears FO] want to see me running." He added that he has been running and has started making cuts. He went on to say that there was no rush in his mind.

Doubts about his health certainly wasn't nfl.com's take on that interview.

So you’re saying if it wasn’t going well Mooney would be publicly volunteering that information? LOLsouthdakbearfan wrote: ↑Fri May 19, 2023 8:52 pm Did any of you actually listen to what Mooney said of his injury and recovery?

No, I’m saying nothing in his interview would indicate otherwise like some have suggested.Mikefive wrote: ↑Mon May 22, 2023 11:20 amSo you’re saying if it wasn’t going well Mooney would be publicly volunteering that information?
