Gervon Dexter has sued Big League Advance, the company which advanced him an approximately $400K NIL deal while he was at the University of Florida. Dexter's deal called for BLA to receive 15% of his pre-tax NFL earnings for 25 years. Dexter's legal team claims that "the agreement violates Florida’s NIL Statute enacted in 2021, in addition to the NCAA’s rules and regulations, and the University of Florida athletic department’s rules, regulations, and by-laws. According to Florida’s NIL Statute: The duration of a contract for representation of an intercollegiate athlete or compensation for the use of an intercollegiate athlete’s name, image, or likeness may not extend beyond her or his participation in an athletic program at a postsecondary educational institution.” (quote from Chicago Sun Times).

BLA has been accused of predatory practices on young unschooled athletes, having been sued by several athletes and taking criticism by agents like Scott Boras. BLA says that it is rolling the dice, that guys they back who don't make it to the major leagues in their sports have no obligation to repay advance payments.

Is it just me, or is that a loan, not an NIL deal? BLA's been doing this for a while: shoulda/woulda White Sox Fernando Tatis just handed over something like 10% of his near-record contract after taking some money from them when he had a cup of coffee in the minors.

Predatory is right, good lord.

Reminds me of a tweet I saw recently that said:
When I was 17, I cried because my mom wouldn't let me get a Limp Bizcuit tattoo. 3 weeks later I was approved for a 180K loan to go to art school.

Much more monies would be given to BLA if he has a 10 year career or so at DL salary, even an average one.

I only now realized this thread was about Gervon Dexter. The original post had Dexter Gordon, and I was like who the hell is that?

If Gervon has a career like Dexter, we're in great shape:

My sprained brain, did you change it to the right name? Did the same thing on another post with Jordan Love, called him Davis Love.

So this company is essentially taking risky bets with huge payout potential. Essentially most payments will be losses. But, They only need 1 out of 50 to make a profit. Its definitely predatory.

That said Dexter is also a moron for accepting it. Wow. Its comically dumb. I hope he has better money management practices now... because that contract was really stupid.

As someone who grew up in pretty extreme poverty, i would ask you to maybe be slightly less of a giant piece of shit about this. I know that feels like a huge ask, but hear me out:

Gervon's father died while he was in college, and then he had a son of his own shortly thereafter. And then shortly after that, he signed the predatory loan. I personally cannot believe that he found himself vulnerable to a scam like this!

I dont think I I'm being a "giant piece of shit". Its objectively true. You can give any explanation you want. Its really dumb. I was the same age when i enlisted my life away for 8 years. I grew up in poverty to an alcoholic father. I dont think that means anything in my analysis. I can feel for him but also see the problems. I agreed its predatory. It can also see its really dumb. Like I said I hope smarter people advise him.

Damn straight. Lost the best actor Oscar to Paul Newman, too.
