NE was begging the stealers to take the win from them but with Trunisky at the helm they simply couldn’t do it.

I was clearly wrong on him. I talked myself into the pick after the draft and held onto that belief WAY too long.

I dunno, I had a similar experience. I talked myself into the pick after being bitterly disappointed we didn't draft Watson, then I hung on until midway through Y3 before I realized it wasn't good. I see him and Fields differently at this same point in their careers for a few reasons:

1. Trubisky stepped into a playoff caliber team with an absolutely elite defense (one of the best Bears defenses of my lifetime). Where as Fields stepped in to a team that was old and at the end of their run.
2. In Y2, Trubisky did not play well but I tried to justify it with the problems that started to show up around him. Fields had to endure a literal roster teardown and the least talented roster in the NFL in a total tank season. So while I gave both passes, Fields got a total "I don't care at all about his stats" pass while Trubisky got a "well I can understand a dip in production" sort of thing.
3. In Y3, and this is the most important part for me...I saw Trubisky continue a downward trajectory as a player, while I'm currently seeing Fields ascending as a player. That's the primary thing. Had Trubisky been ascending in Y3 I'd have hung on to hope with him also. I'd want to have seen how high the ascension would go, which is what I want to see with Fields. I want to see how high it goes, or if what we see now is the peak (I certainly hope not). He has more ascension needed to break into a Top 10 QB range, he's on the outside of that range right now even at his current level of improved play (Last few starts level of play, obviously his 2 week tear would place him as the best QB in football if that were to continue but that's just not realistic at all).

You seem to be forgetting Trubisky's rookie season under John Fox, which was very far from a playoff calibre team. (His receiving corps was even worse than the one Fields had last year.) The defense was top 10 but wasn't elite until Trubisky's second year, boosted by the arrival of Khalil Mack. That was Trubisky's best season and, even though it was very uneven, gave us reason to hope he was trending up. Everything then nose-dived the following year.

Yes, I couldn't understand the decision also. I could see passing on Mahomes, he was in an Air Raid offense and he might be the only one to succeed in the NFL.

Very true in the long run, but if we had Watson in 2018 we win the whole thing based on the year he had.

While we don’t know if his future may have altered had he been drafted here, I do think we could have won it all in 2018 with him. He was great that year and we had the best damn defense I had seen since the 80s

The one thing I saw in Mitch when he was scrambling and throwing on the run without thinking, making plays off script, was “there’s some shades of Steve Young in there”. But it never even came close to evolving past that and he was basically just Christian Ponder instead (who also had some Young to his game).

Watson was spotted like a two touchdown lead in a playoff game due to Special Teams and Defense - and unforunately for the Texans there was no happy ending for them that day.
