Arthur Smith has been fired as head coach of the Falcons. Smith coached for 3 seasons and the Falcons failed to reach the playoffs in any of them.
Where are my old Chicago Bears and what have you done with them, Ryan Poles?

Ron Rivera out in DC as well.
From what I've read (take it with a grain of salt, of course), Harbaugh would prefer the West coast since his wife loved it out there. I'd guess the Raiders (Vegas is close enough) or the Chargers (though the idea of Dean Spanos paying for Harbaugh is...well, not something I envision particularly well).

For what the rumor mill is worth, assuming Michigan wins tonight, Harbaugh will only jump to the NFL for the Raiders or the Bears.
If the Bears stick with Flus, they would be wise to consider Arthur Smith as a replacement for Getsy.

I keep waiting for it. This is terrible. It’s not going to happen.

They aren’t going to do anything today (if they are going to do anything at all). If by some miracle they do go after Harbaugh, it won’t happen until after the outcome of tonight’s game. The Marshall Plan wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 1:52 pm I keep waiting for it. This is terrible. Agreed, but it would be more Bearsy for the Bears to wait until Harbaugh gets snagged by another team and then fire Flus and have no-one to hire.wab wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 3:13 pmThey aren’t going to do anything today (if they are going to do anything at all). There will be plenty of candidates besides Harbaugh.

Well that’s vastly different than “no one left to hire”.Ditka’s dictaphone wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:08 pmFor sure, but will any of them be as accomplished?

Indeed, but in many respects in amounts to the same thing.wab wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:12 pmWell that’s vastly different than “no one left to hire”.Ditka’s dictaphone wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:08 pm

Someone less accomplished could easily be described as a “nobody” in this context

Sometimes hiring a coordinator works out great. (Matt LaFleur, Kyle Shanahan, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin)
Other times it doesn't. (Arthur Smith, Matt Nagy, Ron Rivera, Adam Gase)
I'm not objecting to hiring a guy with experience, simply pointing out that it's no more a guarantee than hiring a guy without.

So is it going to be terrible Tuesday, Wicked Wednesday, thrown-out Thursday, flash fried Friday or sacked Saturday?

The QBs some of those failed coordinators were saddled with didn’t help matters. Marcus Mariota, Carson Wentz, the husk of Jay Cutler.thunderspirit wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 5:23 pm Sometimes hiring a coordinator works out great. (Matt LaFleur, Kyle Shanahan, John Harbaugh, Mike Tomlin)

This is what I've wanted if Flus was being retained. Smith has experience -- and success -- as an offensive coordinator in the NFL, plus he has head coaching experience now. Flus can focus on the defense and let Smith run the offense as he sees fit.
Does Smith want to come here? What's our plan at QB? Some things to shore up, but I like the option.

Man, I've always respected Vrabel. I worry he's too conservative though, and just a slightly better version of Flus. He will get hired for a HC job, and if I were the Patriots I'd fire Billichick and replace him with his protege. A younger version of himself really.

Vrabel's QBs while at Tennessee were Marcus Mariota, Ryan Tannehill, and Will Levis.
Yet he consistently had winning records.
Our roster is way better than those Tennessee teams.
I'd love to see what he could do here.
Granted, Harbaugh is the real prize, but we could do a lot worse than Vrabel.

Between Harbaugh and Vrabel, I'm having a mental shift from sticking with Flus. Either of those guys would be better choices, but Harbaugh would be the franchise statement move. It's time for the Bears to be bold.

Is Ron Rivera a cautionary example?
I know I always say not to put too much into W/L records for HCs, but
His first HC gig lasted 9 seasons, 79–67–1, 4 playoffs and a SB.

I would be extremely happy if the Bears found a way to make this happen
my guess is New England ... Belichick's planned after season meeting with Kraft was to be a discussion regarding GM duties and before they could even get started, Tennessee gives them a gift ... Belichick to full time GM, Vrable new Patriots Head Coach

Vrable is basically a churched up version of Flus. He’s a solid coach but he doesn’t move the needle much for me.

Not NFL, but reports are Saban is retiring from Alabama.
