If a high level of self-confidence tinged with a little arrogance is too much to overlook I guess we should label Mac with the same when he was drafted and showed up for the first time with a 6-pak in hand …
THIS RIGHT HERE!
Think of all the UNBELIEVABLY WILD stuff that McMahon did as a draftee and rookie. Yet, he is beloved in this town.
Folks need to take a chill pill and watch the kid play.
Mac backed it up on the field, that’s what Caleb needs to do.
Don’t feel stifled to operate always in scheme.
Go out there, put on a show and Bears fans will love you.
I think your "concerns" are spot on. We, teams, whoever and watch all the film we want, listen to countless interviews they give and hear what other have to say about them. That can convince us that the player is the real deal. Yet when the step on the field it just doesn't work.
There are very few players I have been convinced where guaranteed to be successful more than Aaron Curry when he was coming out of Wake Forrest. The dude was the "real deal." Heck, there was some talk he could go first overall he was THAT good. Gets to the NFL and simply does nothing. A few other names to through out there - Justin Gilbert, Veron Gholsten (granted he died and might have done something once we gave up a second round pick for him), Justin Blackmon, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith (throwing that in just for @Yogi da Bear he had concerns coming out IMO), Jason Smith, Mike Williams, Courtney Brown.
Outside of Akili I don't recall any of those guys having an issue that made you pause and think they wouldn't be successful in the NFL.
It's simply the fear of the unknown I guess.
Ah my friend you are thinking of the late Gaines Adams. Jerry Angelo traded for him, dude played 10 games for us (0 starts) and then died.
That might be an all-time whiff on a trade acquisition, no?

No, there's no dead player comp pick pool.
I lol'd
"Dad, how would you sum up the Jerro Angelo regime?"
"There's no dead player comp pick pool, son."
I do remember there being talk about creating one - sort of - after Raiders 2nd round pick DT Leon Bender died of a seizure (he had epilepsy) 6 weeks after being drafted. Ultimately it became a 'shit happens' scenario and no pick was awarded.
For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure no one has any doubts about Caleb Williams as a football talent. (I certainly don't.)
Any concerns about him are about his intangibles. If those are good? He's a complete no-brainer selection, the kind of guy you sprint up to the podium to draft. And nothing anyone offers on a trade matters, because nothing anyone legitimately offers is enough.

I liked that show. Wish they hadn't ended it.
I did too but I stopped watching after season 3
I've never seen Season 3. The first two seasons were shown on Channel 5 over here but they didn't broadcast Season 3 despite, if I recall correctly, having the rights. Seasons 4 and 5 were then picked up by another Channel (E4 I think). So Season 3 never saw the light of day on terrestrial TV which was irritating. Maybe one day I'll get a chance to see it, but I didn't enjoy it enough to buy it on Blu Ray. I think it's on Amazon Prime now but you have to still pay extra for it.
Don't look now, but Chris Morgan is running Joe Alt's Pro Day...
Pretty interesting that they have worked out Alt and Fuaga so far. I would imagine the only reason they didn't work out Fashanu is because he has a quad injury from the combine. All three of those dudes are expected to be top 12 picks.
I’d love this TBH. Draft into a strength of the draft at a premium position even if a year ahead of schedule for the need. If we don’t want to pay up for Jones extension we don’t have to. Would have two premium tackles aligned almost perfectly with Caleb’s rookie contract

We haven’t seen any official trade offers for the 1 have we?
That would be the main consideration.
You can’t say well there’s nothing wrong with Caleb. Ok fine.
Would a star player, two first and two seconds change your mind?
But the problem now though is we can only trade with Washington or New England.
I don’t see that happening.
Caleb is coming to Chicago.
We could trade down for this type of haul and take a JJ or Penix or something - both are far superior prospects to Purdy and that worked out fine for them with an elite team constructed around him.
I don't think this is what we're going to do at all, but it's not inconceivable.
I also agree here.
I think its certainly trending (strongly) towards Caleb - but it's not 100% yet

Claypool still worse.
On Gaines IIRC they were really banking on an offseason of him working with Marinelli (I think thats the right time line) - but that never came to pass

But he did pass. I"m with Plank - Mirer was worse. IMO worst trade the team ever made.
