I missed the signing of not 1 but 2 long snappers? Guess the Patrick Scale era is over.
With Allen not getting a number, I'm thinking they may be waiting until after the draft and may give CW the first shot to secure 13 since the plan will be for him to start for the next 15 years and at best I'd think Allen plays 4 (more likely 2-3).

He's getting old, so bringing in guys to get familiar and audition for the future makes sense...Arkansasbear wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 10:56 am I missed the signing of not 1 but 2 long snappers? Guess the Patrick Scale era is over.
...except for 1 of the 2 being even older than Scales(?!?!?)
Is he hurt and going to miss part of camp or something?

I think those dudes had been signed to futures contracts right after the season ended.Arkansasbear wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 10:56 am I missed the signing of not 1 but 2 long snappers? Guess the Patrick Scale era is over.

Maybe we are stockpiling long snappers like we did TEs a few years ago.The Cooler King wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 1:54 pmScales is old. Probably lots of vet rest days in his future

Maybe they're going to emulate that hilarious Bringing In a Dozen Kickers thing from a few years back, but with punters, so they need a fleet of LS to go with.Arkansasbear wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 2:03 pmMaybe we are stockpiling long snappers like we did TEs a few years ago.The Cooler King wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 1:54 pm

That's disappointing. He wore 0 last year with the Eagles. I thought we were going to get our first Bear player in history to wear 0!

George McCaskey has gone on the record saying that so long as heβs in charge no Bear will ever wear zero. No idea why.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 4:57 pmThat's disappointing. I'm not a fan of 0 as a jersey number but given the Bears have maxed out those they can retire adding it would at least open up the possibility of one more. I mean suppose Caleb Williams is, as expected, drafted by the Bears and leads the team to multiple championships...

I think that CW should wear 0. After he wins his first Super Bowl he changes to 1 and increases after each such win. That way when he retires he can wear 13.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 7:25 pmI'm not a fan of 0 as a jersey number but given the Bears have maxed out those they can retire adding it would at least open up the possibility of one more. Probably an adherent to the concept that zero is not a number or something along those lines.UOK wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 6:03 pmGeorge McCaskey has gone on the record saying that so long as heβs in charge no Bear will ever wear zero. No idea why.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 4:57 pm

I'm trying to be realistic in my post. I expect during his career there will be 5 seasons that "it's just not our year." Maybe a key injury, don't play well in a playoff game / Super Bowl. I saying it's 18 years with 18 years in the playoffs and 13 Super Bowl wins and losing 3.HurricaneBear wrote: βFri Mar 22, 2024 1:30 pmWhy is he only playing for 13 seasons?Arkansasbear wrote: βFri Mar 22, 2024 9:05 am

While I think he'd win minimum 18 super bowls in that scenario, your reasoning makes sense. I thought you were losing it saying he'd only make it 13 years.Arkansasbear wrote: βFri Mar 22, 2024 2:48 pmI'm trying to be realistic in my post. That's odd.
I didn't realize Kendall Williamson signed a futures contract with the Bills, not the Bears (before the Bears picked up 2 FA safeties).

Perhaps he thinks as long as he's around, he'll never consider any Bear player being a zero.

As tradition bound as GMcC is I would guess he may even have had an issue for someone wearing numbers #1 and #2 so he felt he had to draw the line somewhere. At least now he's being an owner and just owning instead of interjection himself into management.Yogi da Bear wrote: βTue Apr 02, 2024 11:03 amPerhaps he thinks as long as he's around, he'll never consider any Bear player being a zero.

While I don't think it's helpful to his team, he IS the owner, and I can understand why the owner of a thing might have an interest in ensuring that the thing he own reflects the things he likes and or cares about. Not sure what George's hangup is with those low numbers but it's a real thing I guess...Bearfacts wrote: βTue Apr 02, 2024 12:10 pmAs tradition bound as GMcC is I would guess he may even have had an issue for someone wearing numbers #1 and #2 so he felt he had to draw the line somewhere. I think we will have someone wearing 0 in the not too distant future. Players have their numbers. Back in the 80s, WRs and TEs seemed to gravitate to 80 and 88. But now it seems like everyone wants to be the guy that make the number "famous." I think that's why you see so many skill players wearing single digits or 10-19. Jerry Rice made 80 famous, Randy Moss made 84 famous, so they want a number without all the history.grendel2000 wrote: βTue Apr 02, 2024 2:32 pmWhile I don't think it's helpful to his team, he IS the owner, and I can understand why the owner of a thing might have an interest in ensuring that the thing he own reflects the things he likes and or cares about. There will be a college player we draft soon that has worn 0 his whole career and I think that's when we will see the change. Granted the same thing might happen soon with the number 3 (although that still seems to be a number I don't see worn much), but it's a different story when the number has been retired.

You may or may not know, but the reason WRs and TEs gravitated to those numbers was because of NFL rules. Until a few years ago position groupings had restricted numbers:
QB, K, P 1-19
RB DB 20-49
TE 40-49, 80-89
LB 50-59, 90-99
C 50-79
G, T 60-79
DL 60-79, 90-99
WR 80-89
You would sometimes see WRs with 10-19 because that range was permitted for KR and PR.

I know that. But you would always see more 80s and 88s than 87s or 89s. I think it was the mindset of kids who watch Rice so they wanted to wear his number. I think more and more kids are saying "I want to be the first 'me" not the next "Rice'."thefish7 wrote: βWed Apr 03, 2024 1:46 am You may or may not know, but the reason WRs and TEs gravitated to those numbers was because of NFL rules. But you are correct that having more numbers available now does give them the freedom to do so.

No player has ever worn 0 in the history of this franchise (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). George is old school like that, wants to protect Halas' vision/approach as best he can. I respect the hell out of that.UOK wrote: βThu Mar 21, 2024 6:03 pmGeorge McCaskey has gone on the record saying that so long as heβs in charge no Bear will ever wear zero.
