This is exactly what I feared when NIL got started. NIL coupled with the transfer portal is going to end college football as we've know it.

Oh no - Oregon might win the first title in school history.Arkansasbear wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:49 pmThis is exactly what I feared when NIL got started. NIL coupled with the transfer portal is going to end college football as we've know it.
It's not without issues, but parity wasn't much of a thing before NIL. With NIL, at least some other schools might be able to shake things up a bit. Let's see how things play out with the updated playoff format before we declare things over.
It would be interesting to see something like the NCAA instituting an "NIL Cap" where schools are all give an equal cap for NIL money.

What I'd like to see is a negotiated settlement, where college gets a pro-style salary cap. Booster money is illegal, just like the pros. Minimum salaries for the lesser players, guaranteed health benefits, etc.
I'm not holding my breath, of course.
Probably college football will end up a dystopian hellscape of
a tiny division of top tier schools
the rich buying success (a la the 70s Yankees)
an explosion of even dumber, less mature kids with money they don't know how to handle and a lack of motivation to keep getting better

I'm sure schools such as University of Texas ain't gonna be outspent in their efforts to buy an NCAA championship. They will have to try and institute a cap but I wonder if the players will band together and fight for a percentage of all revenues their schools receive for media, merchandise, etc.

This is exactly why I really don't care about big time college sports anymore. I rarely if ever watch college football unless it is a MAC game during the week or an FCS game. High school sports is my saving grace right now. Kids doing it for the love of the sport.

Same. As a Maryland alum there’s no point in getting into it as we have no chance to competeOtis Day wrote: Tue Jul 16, 2024 7:37 am This is exactly why I really don't care about big time college sports anymore. NCAA and the NIL stuff is fascinating. College football has always been, at least since the early 2000s when I started paying attention, a complete clusterfuck. There's absolutely zero way to make it a level playing field and the money, my god the money. It has corrupted every tier of the landscape, and now with the players rightfully getting their piece of that pie and having the transfer portal more prolific than ever, there's chaos by the boatload piled on top of what was already a circus.
Giving Oregon infinite money is one thing, but that's not going to do it all. NIL is part of the equation, but what's the point of going to Oregon if you really value your individual brand? If they're simply paying every player out the ass, that's great for a ton of mid-tier guys, but those elite 5-star kids that make a program prestigious aren't going to dilute their marketability and net profits unless the offer is too good to be true. And Nike may be able to accommodate that, who knows.
There do need to be some major changes to the NCAA football world, but I can't speak to which ones would even be realistic. There's no point in having the academics be a part of this anymore, honestly, depending on the program. As Cardale Jones once said, they don't come to college to "play school." Why bother with the pretense?
Yes, there are an abundance of excellent athletes in many programs around the nation that value that scholarship and opportunity to build for a post-football life, but with the diminishing value of a college education and constant movement of top players from school to school, what are we even doing here?
I dunno. I'm going to have some more coffee and scratch my nuts about this issue.

Couldn't agree with you more.Arkansasbear wrote: Mon Jul 15, 2024 2:49 pmThis is exactly what I feared when NIL got started. NIL coupled with the transfer portal is going to end college football as we've know it.
However, the problem isn't NIL...the problem is folks like Knight who are abusing NIL.
NIL = Name, Image, and Likeness. Someone explain to me exactly how a high school kid, who hasn't played a single down in college, somehow is worth millions the very second he steps on a college campus??? Explain it like I'm 5 years old. NIL was supposed to pay kids their share for having their name on jerseys that get sold in book stores or online. NIL was supposed to be something you earned, like when you win the Heisman but come back for another year, you get to do national commercials which pay a very nice amount of cash. NIL was supposed to be a local business using college kids to advertise for them while they are in school. NIL was supposed to be an opportunity for college kids to profit off of their accomplishments.....while they are in college.
Instead, NIL is just a way for turds like Phil Knight to take his billions and try to buy a championship. Good luck with that Phil...and I say that because Nick Saban was just run out of college football because he didn't want to have to deal with that crap anymore. He even said the locker room went from guys arguing about which gap to fill to them arguing over how much the school was going to pay them just for being there. The best coaches out there are annoyed with NIL. Heck, Boston College's head coach (Jeff Hafley I think) left after last season to be the defensive coordinator with the Packers and both him and Saban aren't the first I've heard of that left college football and stated NIL as being the reason. Coaches want to coach, they don't want to have to put up with this type of crap.
I have zero problem with kids making money off of their name, image, and likeness. Heck, you score some TDs and get your face on some advertisement that pays you some dough, good for you....but I follow college recruiting and I'm so disgusted by the deals I keep hearing kids getting just for visiting a school. No, not for committing or even signing their letter of intent.....just to visit.
Then you add in the transfer portal that that's where I just want to stop. It's not even kids transferring schools, they've been doing that forever, but you used to have to sit for a year. Then they changed it to where if you graduate, you can transfer anywhere you want to finish your eligibility and not have to sit (undergrads still had to sit). Then they started adding waivers, allowing undergraduates to transfer without sitting a year. Then they got rid of waivers and just said everyone can transfer anytime they want, a one time exception. Now I hear they're changing it to allow anyone to transfer anywhere at any time. So if I understand that correctly, let's say a school's top player gets injured in Week 1.....and if you play that position at another school, you can transfer in season to that school and take that player's place. Um, what???? So if Alabama's top QB gets hurt, and a kid at Auburn wanted to go to Alabama really bad, he can transfer there in season and play against Auburn later in the year after already knowing what Auburn's defensive structure is like. Huh???
F NIL, F the transfer portal! Rant over....

I'm confused as to how Knight can give the program "infinite NIL money"? Now, I'm not debating he's trying to do it...but how, exactly, would that work? That seems like he's exploiting a rather large loophole in the program, does it not?

NIL has no rules so anyone can pay anything to whoever they want. Basically, if a blue chip recruit comes up on a visit and asks for a certain amount of money to attend there, the Oregon coaches will just text that to Knight’s reps and they will probably just reply with a thumbs up.Heinz D. wrote: Tue Jul 16, 2024 6:49 pm I'm confused as to how Knight can give the program "infinite NIL money"? The problem, as quite a few SEC schools are finding out, is Big Ten schools and their alumni all have much deeper pockets…so the balance of power in college football is about to change. I expect Ohio State to run college football for the next several years, along with Oregon making a push here and there.

Silly me. Assuming there were some kind of rules involved. An outline, or something. Wow.makaur wrote: Tue Jul 16, 2024 8:57 pm NIL has no rules so anyone can pay anything to whoever they want. Yeah, it will have to be seriously tweaked before the NCAA becomes even more of a joke than it already is. I will enjoy the SEC losing it's dominance, though. That will be quite fun!

I don’t know the SEC part. Those schools all have insane boosters who very well might do what Knight is doing.Heinz D. wrote: Wed Jul 17, 2024 3:57 pmSilly me. Just for clarification…I don’t mean SEC schools will just bow down to the Big Ten…Georgia will definitely have a say in things…it’s just from a NIL perspective, there are far more wealthy boosters for Big Ten schools willing to throw out whatever it takes. SEC schools have been paying kids for decades but when it comes to Big Ten schools, they have way more cash to throw around.Arkansasbear wrote: Wed Jul 17, 2024 7:37 pmI don’t know the SEC part. Then there’s the school in Ann Arbor. They don’t really play the NIL game, despite having a ton of deep pocketed alumni and coming off a national championship where they had to cheat to win. They will play the NIL game when they start thinking they can’t compete.
All in all, I cannot stand NIL and when you add in the transfer portal, I might just stick to the NFL going forward.

I just think the SEC grads seem to bleed their school colors more than anywhere else. I think in large part to not have strong pro teams in the past to rally around. So I just think they will be throwing more money around than other places. As you point out they’ve already been doing it for a long time.makaur wrote: Thu Jul 18, 2024 7:56 pmJust for clarification…I don’t mean SEC schools will just bow down to the Big Ten…Georgia will definitely have a say in things…it’s just from a NIL perspective, there are far more wealthy boosters for Big Ten schools willing to throw out whatever it takes. And the NIL stuff does indeed suck - but thats of course NCAA
What people were asking for is - maybe this kid can make a little money on the side? maybe there shouldn't be stories of kids literally going hungry? Darnell Autry could be allowed to be like the 9th lead in a movie no one will see? Like you use my name in a video game and/or sell my jersey I get SOMETHING?
Could we have been just like a TOUCH reasonable?
And the answer was: No. It's all or nothing A free sandwich is somehow the same level of corruption as paying a kid 100 K to play.
