That's literally all there is to it. The fun stuff is the developing stuff.
I live in Seattle. The whole grunge scene wouldn't have happened without southside Chicagoans. No SubPop, no Soundgarden, no scene. The kids here still would've had fun, and I have good reason to believe the idea was to promote bands like Tad and the Melvins. But it got too big, and the rest of us had to put up with awful shit like Nirvana and Pearl Jam and such.
Point is, it wasn't any sort of autochthonous expression of essential Seattle-ness. It was just a handful of dumbasses from Seattle and parts toward the coast. Until a bunch of hardasses, serious guys at least, came over here from Chicago. There's something pretty special about being from the only city in the US that can claim to be a cosmopolis on a strictly North American basis. Chicago doesn't need to care what you think, rest of the world. It'll just punch your teeth in if it needs to.
Fuck a bunch of boomers trying to cash in on what other boomers built. Fuck worrying about $400 tickets. No one's putting on a concert worth anything close to that, and you're stupid if you even think about paying to play the fool. Kids are playing cool music near you. Find 'em and support 'em. Or you don't matter.

So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

In the burbs there used to be a Taste Of Such & Such with whatever town it was in and there would be bands.Moriarty wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 2:57 pmOtis Day wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 1:38 pm I am thinking that the people that put these events on are short on cash. With everything increasing in price, I think it is cramping some of these festivals.
One of the bigger midwest Blues fests (Mississippi Valley Blues Fest in Davenport, IA) is not happening this year due to money. They usually brought in at least 6 headlining blues acts (ones that even the novice blues fans would know) along with about a dozen well known bands then filled out the rest with local bands. If not mistaken, it was not supposed to be until September (moved from July 4th weekend) and they cancelled it at the end of 2023.
As far as older acts, you still have REO touring with Night Ranger. Sammy Hagar (with Satriani, Jason Bonham, Michael Anthony) touring with Loverboy. The Stones are somehow still out there doing it. Granted these acts were from the 70s/80s.wab wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2024 1:53 pm We used to have a big Summer Fest thing down here, but it sort of died out when Covid happened.
It just seems like people aren't willing to shell out money they don't have for festivals anymore. I mean in like 1998 I think I paid $40 for an Ozzfest ticket. That would easily be $400 today.
I'm not talking regular tours, or even the paid festivals, though, I mean the better free local suburban town fests used to have names.
Maybe COVID was involved.
Although I feel like I've seen acts like Lou Gramm, Richard Marx, Bad Company, Ace Frehley playing free shows in the 2021-23 years.
Unfortunately an unruly element creeped into those places over the years so I no longer go.

Hell, it used to be, 35-40 yrs ago, about 4-5 bars in town would have live music. You would have your pick. Now, we are lucky to get one bar having music about every 2-3 weeks. Not sure what is happening there, I miss that. I can sit in a bar and drink for 4 hrs if there is live music. If there is no live music, I really don't want to be in a bar.

One of the best things about liking a music style that 1/10 people enjoy is that concert tickets are still, at most (unless we're talking about Metallica or something) $40. Most of the shows I go to are still $20-$30. There seem to be a lot of tours coming through, suddenly. I normally only make it to a couple of shows a year, but I've already seen 4 or 5 this year and have tickets for another in September.
Having played in a band for a several years (and organized a lot of shows), there were few local acts worth actually going to see, imo. I don't go to many local shows, and the good local bands I do enjoy tend to get opening slots for the regional and national acts that come through. I don't care for cover bands, and I generally avoid bars with live music (unless I'm there to see an original band, specifically) because if I'm out at a bar, it's to hang out / talk to my friends. Hard to do that with live bands playing. Just my two cents - no disrespect to those who go out to enjoy live music and support local artists.

Well, the purpose of hearing a band at the bar is hearing the band. I can talk to my friends prior to the music starting, during breaks and after the music. If I am just going to drink with friends, I would rather do it at my house or someone else's in front of a fire pit and some jams playing a little quiet in the background. Beers are cheaper that way.LacertineForest wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 2:32 pm One of the best things about liking a music style that 1/10 people enjoy is that concert tickets are still, at most (unless we're talking about Metallica or something) $40. That'd be my preference, too (drinks by a fire), but some of my friends prefer to go out to bars for drinks. I don't have more than 1 or 2 whether I'm at home or a bar, so not a big deal to me - never been much of a drinker. If you're going out specifically to enjoy the music, then that makes perfect sense - more power to you, and I hope you get to enjoy more live bands in the future. I feel like more shows have been coming around than anytime since before COVID, but I'm mostly thinking of venues that are more medium-to-large venues than what you'd call a bar. Of course they serve alcohol, but I'm not paying $10 for a beer.Otis Day wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 3:05 pmWell, the purpose of hearing a band at the bar is hearing the band. Speaking of stupid bar prices, I walked up to the beach around 5 yesterday and we had 2 basic ass drinks at a beachfront restaurant for happy hour. $40. Again, Happy Hour. WTF

Well, Bonnie Raitt at 74 yrs old has still got it. Amazing her voice still sounds like it did 20-30 yrs ago. She stated she has been performing for 54 yrs.
It was a pretty mellow concert and I would have to say that the sound was perfect. No instrument drowned out the other, everything was in perfect balance.

That's about the size of it. Got a divorce brewing, too, so I'd probably gotten into my cups while trying to figure out how to keep our home. Still no reason to douse the board in my bile; sorry to all.

No reason to apologize.
Kind of excited. A local restrauteur opened up in a new place. The new locale has had many people thru it the past 10 yrs and nothing has really been successful. Not sure why. It is just a block and a half off Main St, downtown business district. They have spruced it up and are planning on using the "entertainment" area more frequently. This area is good size and has a raised stage. Plan are to have some live music here. He serves good food, smoked meats and sides and he will have a full service bar.

50/50, with me as custodial parent for fun stuff like making sure they have insurance and such. She moved less than two miles away, so even the younger kiddo can ride his bike back and forth.
That's assuming that everything we've discussed gets solemnified. We went in for a collaborative process, thinking that it'd be quicker and less expensive, but some important things seem to have been written in sand. Too familiar a feeling, I'm afraid. We'll see.

Thanks, guys.
Bringing it back on topic, an old college friend has encouraged me to have a Hot Girl Summer, which I'm sure would be easier for her than for me. The closest I'll likely get is catching X on their last-ever tour (Chicago's the only sold-out show, which makes sense since everyone but DJ's from near there, and since Chicago fucking rocks).

We are going to see Chris Stappleton in a few months.
The weekend of my nephews "wedding" (I won't rehash that hellish adventure again, but will say neither he or his wife have bothered to send thank you cards for the gifts we got them which is pretty much what I expected) in Nashville we got to see some amazing people perform.
If you like live music, you can't beat Nashville. It's mostly country, but Kid Rock has a place there as well that has great rock music.
I love it because you can start about 10:30 a.m. and places have groups playing that are super good. Many have a band on 3 floors and then a roof top. Listen to music for a bit, grab a late lunch, listen to other groups until about 6-8:00 (six if the weekend 8 during the week) and get off Broadway before it becomes a mad house. Get a great dinner somewhere and head home. The older I get the more I support day drinking.

Gouge Away are back in the states on their tour later this year and I'd heartily recommend them. https://www.gougeaway.com/tour
I'm not a scene guy for Hardcore, just one of the things I like, but man, one of the best live sets I've ever seen at Outbreak over here, really impressive.

Looking forward to Sammy Hagar and the Best of All Worlds Tour this Saturday night in Maryland Heights, MO. The reviews have been good. I have seen some videos and they are sounding pretty damn good. Toward the end of the tour and Sammy's voice is sounding a little tired. I mean the dude is 76. It is the last show of the tour. I hope there are some surprises. Joe Satriani is kicking ass. I like how he seems to be keeping real and not trying to pull off Eddie to a tee.

Sammy and the fella did not disappoint. Perfect weather for an outdoor concert. Low 80s when it started and dropped a tad as the show went on. They played 2 hrs, 22 songs. Place was sold out and was rocking. Satriani kicked ass. People want to say he isn't Eddie, well of course not. He believe people were satisfied with what they heard. Kenny Aronoff sat in for Jason Bonham and I think he is the better drummer anyway. Show exceeded my expectations. It had been 39 yrs since I had seen Sammy. Dude still has the voice to do some rock n roll.

Last night in an effort to do my part in supporting our local, beautiful theater (built in 1916 to atract vaudeville acts) I went and saw Rumour, The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band. I must say they did a helluva job. The place was just about sold out which is great for the theater. The crowd was older of course and everyone seemed to enjoy the show. What I found interesting was the people playing Mac stayed in character and referred to each other by the names of whom they were portraying. While I much prefer the Peter Green version of Fleetwood Mac, the later formation with Buckingham, Nicks and Christine McVie put out some good music as well.
