What’s the cap hit if his contract is terminated for cause?

I haven't looked at their roster, but that might be a good trade-deadline target if they have a good OL with a big salary in the next couple of years.

They'd lose more cap by trading him lol. The Browns actually are a terribly run organisation!

The Browns are completely effed...I think their only out at this point would be to try and trade Watson (not sure who would even want him) and eat half or more of his cost so a team could actually take him on. But even at half price, I'm not sure anyone would want him.

Or, he has done or does something worthy of voiding the contract.

Possible ACL injury in today's game. Might be the last we see of him as a starter in Cleveland.

May go down as the worst contract in NFL history

The Browns apparently have injury insurance on Watson that will give them a bunch of cap relief, so it's entirely possible Watson never plays another down in the NFL.

Probably going to cost Stefanski his job. Which is too bad, because I think he's a good coach.

In the second link, it sounds like the Browns will recoup 25% of his salary if the policy pays out in full.

Wild, I knew teams had insurance policies but I had no idea that the league would give cap credit for the amount received by that policy should it be needed. This is a really big deal IMO. A big part of why guaranteed contracts aren't frequent is due to the injury concern, but if teams can offset the cost and more importantly the cap space with an insurance policy, then why wouldn't they do this all the time?

Also, I wonder if the price of the insurance policy is added to the cap hit on the player? If they get the cap relief when it's utilized, then shouldn't they be taking a cap hit for the cost to hold the insurance?

Thanks for sharing this!

The guy should ride off into the sunset to some obscure place to never be heard from again. I believe he has the cash to never be heard from again.

Absolutely stupid contract a stupid team gave him.

A little bit of discussion about it here (as well as a link to Kalyn's original article on it):

Watson will miss rest of 2024 season after tests confirmed a ruptured Achilles. He'll have surgery this week and is expected to make a full recovery, per the Browns.

Browns are going to send Tanya Harding to his house for one of his rehab massages...

Oh he’d be heard from again. New lawsuits would still be popping up.

Thats best case for the Browns actually - His contract is borderline Transactional Immunity Ark!

Like the Browns had the gall to say - ok, so we can live with like 23 Sexual Assaults- just make em go away. But that's it right?!!! You gotta tell us - We draw the Line at 24 or 25. That's just too many

Way more permissive as an organization than Dick Van Patten
