One issue to watch is depth on the defensive line. Nose guard Andrew Billings has been on the field for 68% of the snaps. Last year it was 47%. Gervon Dexter has been even busier, logging 72.4% of the defensive snaps, after played 40% as a rookie. One problem is second-year defensive tackle Zacch Pickens hasn't played since early in Week 1. The Bears trusted Byron Cowart to play just 11 snaps against the Rams. …

This is why I'm always taking DT first in these sims.
It also makes the 2nd DE position less urgent, if everything else is great.

My main concern in my mock was starters in the G and OC positions. I traded down a bit in the first round and was still able to secure what was supposed to be the best DT in the draft. A solid WR and TE was also important to me. I didn't use OT because I see Kirian here.

Thanks. I thought it was stupid that Starks got out of the first, but it would've felt like a luxury before I'd taken an O-lineman. He's great, but has he gotten that Polamalu/Reed/Thomas game-changer aura about him? I'd been thinking of him more as a glue guy, but haven't been following things as closely this year.

Greene, yeah, maybe I was thinking "if he plays anywhere, it's RG...and if he makes it at RG, he'll make it big."

Well, the honeymoon is over. I was hoping against hope that I wouldn't be doing mock drafts before the season ended as I bought into the Bears' hype and they rolled to a winning record and the playoffs. Alas, it was not meant to be. So now it's looking at DL/DE/OL. In '23, 4 teams finished with 4 or fewer wins, another with 5, and 2 more with 6. The Bears are currently at 16 but could rise to as high as 6 or 7. 17 teams are currently at 4 or fewer wins.

Despite how bad the Bears are I haven't done a deep dive into college talent, yet. So I'm pretty limited to the first 3, maybe 4 rounds. That being said, I love what you did with the first 4 picks. I do fear that Campbell very well could be off the board at 12. Given I think we are going to be picking so high, he's he guy I hope we come away with in the first.

1.10: Mason Graham, DT, Michigan. Not just a surpassing talent and a mulligan on the Jalen Carter mistake, but a tone-setter who should help further define whatever scraps of team character remain after Eberflus.

2.38: Tyler Booker, G, Alabama. I've liked what I've seen, though admittedly that's not every one of his games. Another outspoken team leader from what I've read.

2.42: LT Overton, DE, Alabama. I really like this guy. A rich man's DeMarcus Walker, or maybe a hypercaffeinated man's DeMarcus Walker, but still a fun piece as a DE/DT to Walker's proper DT/DE.

3.74: Kevin Winston, S, Penn St. It's weird to say "pending recovery from mystery injury," but everything points to his surgery being minor. I'd meant to draft a safety a bit later, but he's clearly the BPA right now, so why not? He's very, very good.

5.147: Xavier Nwankpa, S, Iowa. This might be where the "moderately high" part comes into play. After taking Winton by virtue of his being BPA on my list...I did it again. Next HC, DC certainly plays a role and, sure, 6'2 250 is easier to project to OLB, but I wouldn't in any way write it off before knowing the system.
