I hate flags. So I'll start there, I hate people who wave their stupid fucking flags around and act like a bunch of dicks trying to antagonize people.
Now I've noticed several college football teams doing this flag planting thing on their opponents field after they beat them, and it's just horrible sportsmanship IMO. What ever happened to being a graceful winner? I'm in full support of the home team beating the crap out of the opposing team if they pull a disrespectful stunt like that. Coaches need to put an end to it.
I remember when TO tried to stomp on the Cowboys logo at midfield and got bum rushed - well deserved. Act a fool get treated like one IMO.
What is with all this flag planting crap?

I’ve no problem with flags, but like you say - be a gracious winner.
Play hard, compete hard, support like a diehard fan.
But when the game ends, act like an adult and be gracious.
Even at Lambeau.

I don't know why coaches allow for that kind of behavior. It's great to celebrate a hard-earned win, especially over your rivals, but don't be a dick about it.

I'm all for trash talking during the game, but even I think the flag thing is too much. Once the games over shake hands and move on

Dad always said act like you have been there before and have class. But of course he would have grabbed anyone by the ear if they pulled some of these stunts.

I agree that players need to have some class. I haven't watched all the videos from this past weekend, but I think some of it is fans running onto the field (the NCAA will fine those schools for that). The problem is players are people and they have feelings and emotions. The fans get in their face and they need to walk away. But they have just lost and likely are feeling upset/down/whatever you choose and these asshats get in their face. They need to walk away no matter what, but their emotions get the best of them.
When Arkansas somehow managed to beat TN a few weeks ago the students (and likely some grown ups) rushed the field. An OL from TN ended up knocking down one of the idiot fans on the field (I don't think they need to be there). Never saw the fan do anything that justified it (he could have said something of course). Don't care what he said, if I'm the coach, I'm sitting that player. (granted since I"m not the coach, I'm not under the pressure to make the playoffs - which is why they never do what they should, they are too consumed with winning).

Flag planting is sort of a representation of where we are as culture. It's all just boring to me.
One team plants flag: "Why they gotta do all that shit! It's unsportsmanlike! Just shut up and play!"
Leading to the response: "If they don't want the flag planted, then they should have thought about that during the game! Not gotten their asses kicked!"
It's the same argument as...
"Just shut up and run the bases! No need to disrespect the opposing team/pitcher!"
"Well, if he doesn't like it, then don't give up a damn home run! Problem solved"
It's really a boring/predictable argument that happens in like 37 different variations nowadays. It's to the point that I don't even care one way or the other. Do whatever the hell you want. React however the hell you want. It has nothing to do with me. I just want the Bears to win. I just want my fantasy team to do well. I just want whoever I bet on to play well. Outside of that? I don't care about any of this nonsense surrounding it.
I've adopted that mindset in most of my life and it's brought me peace.
In sports, I've accepted that I probably wouldn't care to personally know 90% of these individuals. In football, that number probably stems to 95%, if I'm being honest. Most of the time, when I hear these guys interviewed, I just think they sound like complete jerk offs.
If I don't have expectations for a group of people and their behavior - it impacts me far less when they behave like morons.

Agreed that it is tedious and repetitive.
However, I would say "If you don't like other people's behavior, you should never, ever lose a game or let them score points ever again" is a pretty retarded "solution".
What is or isn't acceptable sportsmanship has nothing to do with on-field performance.

Counter point: It's actually a very funny thing to say. This is hilarious, to me:Moriarty wrote: Wed Dec 04, 2024 10:29 amRichie wrote: Wed Dec 04, 2024 2:58 am Flag planting is sort of a representation of where we are as culture. It's all just boring to me.

I personally hate the hand wringing over people having fun. It's fucking sports and some people want to treat it like it's a life or death situation. I dont get it.

I know pro NBA players, even LeBron, love trash talking and say it's what they grew up with. I find it offensive as I do the flag planting (I'm with you on flags, DP) , logo stomping, etc. What ever happened to good 'ol mascot stealing before the big game? That's about as common now as panty raids.

Oh man, that first Eddie Izzard HBO special was so fucking good. There are a number of lines in it that are stuck in my head forever, and “Hello, what do you do? You’re a plumber? What on earth is that?” is one of them.

Got to see Eddie / Suzy Izzard live last year. They have a way of thinking that really resonates with me, and I love their comedy. I will absolutely go see them again if they come around.

Nice! I haven't really followed them in a long time, had no idea of the Susan name change. I tried to get into their FX show (The Riches with Minnie Driver) but it just wasnt what I wanted it to be (and it seems like everyone agreed, since it got canceled pretty quick).

I guess I got it slightly wrong, too - it's Suzy. I didn't even know she had a show, but I have rarely liked shows done by standup comedians (Louie - even before all the perv shit, Jim Gaffigan, etc).Rusty Trombagent wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:54 am Nice! I love stand up comedy. It's one of my favorite forms of entertainment.

I went to see this chap recently. He does love a good rant!wab wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 1:39 pm I love stand up comedy. It's one of my favorite forms of entertainment.
Rhod's latest show is pretty dark. He was diagnosed with head and neck cancer a couple of years ago and went through a lot of gruelling treatment. The whole show was about finding humour in the whole experience while not shying away from how awful the disease is. It ended with a video showing what he endured laced with some throwbacks to jokes he'd made throughout the evening. He got a standing ovation from everyone at the end and they had folks from Cancer Research UK collecting donations afterwards.
