Gotta love it. Veterans typically take the 1st round pick out to eat and make him pick up the tab. in perhaps the ultimate gotcha, the Seahawks and 1st round pick Byron Murphy went out to eat. He was presented with a tab of over $155K, causing a slight heart attack:

The real bill was still over $38K but more palatable.

What the hell does a shot of scotch that cost $1200 taste like?!?!!!?
When my best friend got married in Cabo we had dinner one night and they came around asking if we wanted tequila shots. The girls I was dating and I had about 3 each. When dinner was over I found out they were $80 a shot. I was just a few years out of law school not making much. His dad was picking up the bill and I told him I didn’t know and felt bad and I’d pay for them but he told me to forget about ( my friend’s family has lots of issues, but money isn’t one of them).
For reference, an $80 shot of tequila tastes no different than a shot of Patron that goes for $8 today and likely would have been about $2 back then.

Did you know that there's a staggeringly large amount of players who are completely broke 5 years after leaving the NFL? Anyway, here's a heartwarming story about how teammates spent $100k on dinner to fuck with the new kid.

Yes, it's sad. It's sadder that they don't receive the financial training they need to avoid this situation or, if offered it, refuse.Rusty Trombagent wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 9:55 am Did you know that there's a staggeringly large amount of players who are completely broke 5 years after leaving the NFL? Every team offers this training for rookies and it’s mandated by the league. But that doesn’t mean it sticks.Grizzled wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 5:40 pmYes, it's sad. I find the whole thing offensive on many levels, and it’s pretty played out also.

Giving financial advice to guys, most of whom have never had that type of money, is offensive?dplank wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 7:42 pmEvery team offers this training for rookies and it’s mandated by the league. But that doesn’t mean it sticks.Grizzled wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 5:40 pm

Oh you mean the hazing thing. That bothers me less than some of the things they use to do to them.

I didn’t even mean the hazing thing, I meant the 38K dinner tab thing in general. I don’t mind the prank part but the actual bill is obnoxious and wreaks of “let them eat cake”. The whole bubble these players create for themselves almost ensures most of them will end up broke - it’s really stupid and a lot of these rookies don’t know anything about having money and how quickly it will go away particularly if they do stupid shit like spending 38K on a dinner. And of course just the optics of it, while everyone around them are struggling they do stuff like this instead of doing better things with their money just never sat well with me. But that’s just meArkansasbear wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 9:25 pmGiving financial advice to guys, most of whom have never had that type of money, is offensive?dplank wrote: Sat Jan 04, 2025 7:42 pm

Hazing and obnoxiously over-spending are two things that professional organizations should counsel their employees against.

Tastes the same as a 4$ shot of Scotch. Stick with Bourbon.Arkansasbear wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2025 11:46 pm What the hell does a shot of scotch that cost $1200 taste like?!?!!!?
Who ever thought the Bears HC search would have to wait until the Lions completed their post season run?

Agree that all this stuff is incredibly gauche. I saw loads of ostentatious gift giving this year (probably just my first time seeing it with Twitter's awful new algo) and that turned my stomach a bit as well. Admittedly I'm the kind of peson who spent under £100 on their wedding ring so am perhaps not the intended audience for that kind of stuff!

I gotcha. I'm pretty much in that boat as well. I see a huge difference in a $6 bottle of wine and a $20 bottle. Can taste a bit of difference in a $20 and $60-100 bottle. I don't notice anything from a $100 bottle compared to something that cost twice as much or more. Granted I'm sure there are some people who can, I don't think a bunch of NFL players would notice the a difference in the $1200 shot of scotch and a shot that cost $20. Heck, I'm the guy that doesn't notice much of a difference in "name brand" food products compared to what Aldi carries. Bread, mayo and sour cream and onion chips being clear exceptions. All the generics of those suck. (Don't eat much mayo, but when I do it can't be the cheap crap).dplank wrote: Sun Jan 05, 2025 8:42 amI didn’t even mean the hazing thing, I meant the 38K dinner tab thing in general. Also once the see they can drop $38K on a diner and it "was nothing," because when their next paycheck hits, their account is loaded again, I imagine it it comes that much easier to start dropping $50K on earrings or a necklace and $300K on a car and lets get an extra one just like it so my buddy Rob can drive it next to me.
