He's struggling a bit.
The bad:
- Not very fast paced
- He's not running the 40
- So far only throwing short easy completions
- Sailing the ball on out breaking routes
- Not using his lower body in his mechanics
Good(ish):
- He looks the part of an NFL QB
- His mechanics are coachable
- He's taking snaps under an actual center
- He has an impressive arm
- He throws really well on the run, footwork improves when he's on the move
Whoever he has catching his passes aren't doing him any favors. Something like 6 drops in his first 10 throws.

Mayock interviewed him afterwards, and the dude has a high football IQ. Mayock came away impressed.

I have no idea if this dude goes top 20 or goes in round 2.

Late 2nd early 3rd is my guess. He's a raw project and a lot of mechanic drills to get where he needs to be to run an NFL offense.

Never been impressed as a R1 guy.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

He's one of those weird prospects that could go #5 or #105.

I think he has crazy upside and there are teams in the late first round that could develop him while still winning games:
Steelers, Saints, Jaguars (he would be an improvement over Bortles by Week 1)
I'm seeing some "he's like Tebow, it won't work in the NFL" arguments around the net and roooooolling my eyes. The Vick comps hurt him a little because he's not Vick fast, but he's stronger. He moves piles and looks more durable IMO.
His delivery needs work but it's a quick delivery which is better IMO to start with than the long slow windups you get from guys who are 100% shotgun spread and working from a clean pocket.

momma's boy needs a real agent. However, some of those clubs are having trouble arranging meetings with Jackson, per NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock.
"I've had several teams tell me they're having trouble just getting to set up appointments to meet with him," Mayock said Thursday during Path to the Draft's coverage of the UL pro day. "Not just work out, but appointments to meet with him, to put him up on the board, to work him out, to have dinner with him. And remember, and again I'm not taking a shot here at anybody, his mom is representing him, his mom has obviously his best interest at heart, but you're doing the kid a disservice if NFL coaches and general managers are calling and you can't even get an appointment set up."

I think he ends up going top 18..and if 4 QBs go before us, that could make us a nice trade up spot. This kids talented...Someone will fall in love with him.
My guess is that the Ravens take him and he goes on to win multiple league MVPs…

Runs too much and will get killed in the nfl. Looks fairly slight on his build for running as well.

Yeah, maybe he'll show something at the combine or his pro day...Adipost wrote:I’m really hoping this guy shoots up the board and a team trades into the #8 spot for him.

I saw a part of Mayock's interview with him last night.... woof. I can see why his mother isn't setting him up for interviews with teams.

It was awful, man, and I honestly had a hard time even understanding what he was trying to say. How are you going to interview with GMs to be the face of the franchise sounding like that, how are you going to sound calling out plays in the huddle, etc etc etc... tons of questions there. I think it's a huge flaw in his profile right now if I had to think about drafting him.wab wrote:Yeah. Holy shit you guys are being ridiculous about the interview:

He's alittle mumbly in a TV interview. Good lord guys. You honestly think that's going to affect his draft stock? He was low key and respectful.

I don’t know if it will really affect his draft stock, but he could use some help from an agent in prepping a lot more for this type stuff.
I'm more worried about what I saw of him throwing. He's got a long way to go to be accurate, and I think he's super slight of frame to do all the running he's going to need to do to compensate for his inaccuracy.RustyTrubisky wrote:Holy shit you guys are being ridiculous about the interview:

I just don't think he can be a pro QB that will have sustained success. He might be a 2-3 year guy running around making plays until he gets hurt or the hits add up.
And yes, the 13 will not help his draft stock.

I am a Lamar Jackson fan.
I think he'll be successful if he's given the opportunity.
Time will tell.

I'm with you, didn't see anything wrong with the interview? Now I wouldn't draft him with his completion percentage but that interview was fine.RustyTrubisky wrote:Holy shit you guys are being ridiculous about the interview:

How could he concentrate with Mayock's weird neck skin and hobo facial hair coming at him?

Not this shit again.
Most of those QB runs are designed runs in the Petrino offense. 3/4 of Jackson's rushing yards were on designed runs.
Holy Shit - We got Justin Fields!

I'm Jackson fan. I think he's going top 15. That being said, he's got a ways to go... but the same things that are being said about him (from a development standpoint) were said about Mitch last year. The one thing that separates them is that Mitch had better accuracy coming out.

Has anyone found advanced stats for the QBs? I'd love to see Air Yards per Attempt because we need someone to set aside tunnel screens and whatnot if we're gonna talk accuracy by statline.
I'd also note that Jackson's lack of accuracy doesn't come with picks. The eye test tells me that he tries to throw it where the defenders can't get it, and sometimes his WRs can't get it either.
Btw I probably sound like I'm saying he's the best QB in the draft - I'm not. I'm still struggling with that, and I'm glad we already got our guy. I'm just saying he should absolutely be in the conversation for a high pick because he IS a legit QB prospect and not some raw athlete. He has the potential to learn an NFL system just as well as any of the other guys who don't run a traditional system, AND he's the most athletic in this year's class.
