A lot to like if the draft unfolds like this. Doubling up at QB is my favorite. I like loading up at several positions on OL. The only pick I'm not big on is the TE, I'd rather see them take a flier on a speed WR.

I'd prefer that, too, but not seeing a lot of speed receivers and 80% of what there is are munchkins that are even smaller than Mooney.
I take the Michigan kid a lot in late rounds, because he's one of the few options available.

After combine, we'll see if there's any more speed lying around.

P#016. Travis Etienne - RB, Clemson
WHY: I know it seems ludicrous, but I hate drafting for need. Etienne's running style reminds me of Walter Payton. He's so fluid and athletic, and since this isn't a great QB draft, you're going to really need to rely on the running game, and build around somebody special in that regard. I feel like the Bears could easily flip Montgomery or to a lesser possibility Cohen for a conditional '22 pick and use whoever stays as a backup/swing back.

P#048. Aidan Hutchinson - EDGE, Michigan
WHY: Once again, not drafting for need. Hutchinson can ball. He's a disruptor, and if he's not creating pressure on quarterbacks, he has a great sense of timing and use of his size to deflect passes or otherwise make plays on the ball. From a Bears perspective, with Robert Quinn being a loaf of expensive dead weight that you have to eat for at least a year, the Bears need actual production alongside Mack in what would probably be his final year on the Bears, barring a major resurgence from the team record-wise in 2021 (which I don't see happening). Hutchinson would potentially be a useful supplement in a fledgling pass rush.

WHY: Tashaun Gipson was a useful and above average strong safety, but he serves the minimum of what you want from your starter. Cisco could come in and be a more free-wheeling Strong, and if you watch his tape his expertise is timing and technique with his hits. He's quick to read underneath plays and time his shoulder hits with the receivers. This defense absolutely requires playmakers on the ball to give an offense that most certainly will be in a weird place next season all the opportunities it can to succeed/grow.

WHY: Because if I went through this draft without taking an offensive lineman, dplank would come burn my house down. Plus the Bears need to treat the tackle position like quarterback - draft one every year. Always. Big dude, 6'5" 300+. Work with that. He's not Rashaad Coward, so instant upgrade.

P#193. Kellen Mond - QB, Texas A&M
WHY: I'm not sure if Mond would be available here or if this is a massive reach, but of the scrub late-round quarterbacks available at this position, Mond is the only one I saw who had an NFL arm. Decision making and ball placement seem very crisp. He's a pretty good athlete too, and playing behind what surely will be a mostly bad offensive line, the Bears would need a guy who can scramble on 3 out of every 5 passing snaps. Even if he turns out to be nothing, the Bears need to start seriously committing to annually drafting a passer until they find a legitimate star.

WHY: When I reached this pick I didn't see much in the way of worthwhile talent, so Hufanga would be somebody I'd invest in as a special teams contributor. The Bears had a lot of hopes that Joel Iyiegbuniwe would be that guy, but he's proven to be a non-factor, particularly on special teams.

WHY: Ass end of the draft here, and with some of the tape I watched, Grey was the only one he seemed to have value to offer. He runs good routes, seems to consistently bring the ball down. 6'4" 240+ athlete would be the heir apparent to Jimmy Graham, who more than likely would be cut this offseason to open up a lot of cap space to fill other voids in the roster, namely offensive tackle and likely quarterback.

I only did 5 rounds on the simulator. Quite frankly, Crum may be there later but it’s a guy I like. My entire vision is to improve the line and gain size on both sides. The trenches are where the games are won or lost. Call me old school, but hey.

Darrisaw may be a good solid pick and may move up on charts quite a bit. I don’t know a ton about the linemen yet as a group, so wouldn’t be mad if it was a different guy. But just feel this is a critical position that needs attention. It will help now and the future. I feel you build with guys in the trenches and then go for the skill positions. Myers will also fill a need and having 3 guys that can play in the middle can’t hurt. I really like Crum as a mid to late round QB. It won’t be a big investment with that kind of pick, but has a chance to be rewarded. This strategy could work for now and the future.

I got an offer of 27 and 33 for 14 which I took.
27: Joseph Ossai - LB/EDGE - Texas
Profiles as either a 3-4 OLB or perhaps a Rosey Colvin type, WILL in base 4-3 who bumps to end in a sub package. I'll accept that versatility. Productive rusher. Good athleticism. Probably a top 5 pass rusher in the draft- in that 2nd teir.

33: Rashawn Slater - G/T. Northwestern
Short arms will hurt his stock and make some consider him a IOL only. Still, has a shot to stick outside. Part of my calculus at 27 was there were a handful of good looking OL still there, so I figured I'd have good options at 33. And Slater seems like a good option there.

48: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
Ended up being a tough spot in this particular draft. There was some consideration of Mac Jones or Kyle Trask here for one. But overall I felt Harris provided the most valuable. He's a top 3 RB in the draft and could make a case for RB1 (though I wouldn't go that high). Still at 50, gives the Bears a strong runner to pair with Montgomery and eventually become the bell cow.

78: Kellen Mond - QB - Texas A&M
This was the last spot to get a QB that wasn't a total lottery ticket IMO. A bit of a reach according to the big board, but it's worth the risk. Mond has been inconsistent in the past and probably has a lot of good traits without any standout trait. He'll probably get a lot of Dak Prescott comps, fwiw. Not a terrible comp as far as comps go.

Though everything looks good on paper before they play an actual NFL game or injuries pile up.

I just did a few of these mocks with the trade thing, there may be several guys where the bears pick that may be worth another team trading up for. Feel the Bears really should look to that as an option. Wouldn’t want to move back more than 5-8 positions, but if they could get another early pick or one for next season... these are fun sites to play with anyway. Just a shame we are already doing them in week 12

Did another mock, this time trading down numerous times early, not so much as to believe it would actually happen, but more to familiarize myself with the field.

48. Jalen Mayfield, OT - Michigan: Young, raw talent with tremendous athleticism and size. Could play either side. Too much potential to leave on the board, and happens to be at a position of great need.

50. Chazz Surratt, LB - UNC: I glowed about Surratt last year before he decided to return to the Tar Heels. He reminds me a lot of Myles Jack and Jabril Peppers, kind of LB/S hybrids who you can plug in play in coverage or unleash them as missiles in a blitz. Feels like a dynamic, unique talent that would add a fun and useful element to an aging Bears defense.

51. Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR - USC: I was torn between St. Brown and Tylan Wallace, but St. Brown seems like more of a useful fit. Great length, nimble feet, strong enough to be consistently separated. The offense probably won't have Allen Robinson next season, and St. Brown seems like a nice option to vie to fill that role eventually.

Rasheed Walker, OT - Penn State: 6'6" 320 pounds with a lot of praise about veteran technique in a guy who's only started a dozen-odd games, Walker, like Mayfield before him, is another slab of beef who has a tremendous amount of upside. This was a BPA pick for me, and once again, suited a position the Bears are woefully thin at.

94. Kolby Harvell-Peel, S - OKST: This guy reminds me of Mike Brown. I watched the tape and kept seeing #30 for the Bears. Sold.

113. Desmond Ridder, QB - Cincinnati: QB options were drying up and I didn't want to take a practice squadder later in the draft. Ridder intrigues me because his arm is pretty solid, but the accuracy is top-notch. Great size, 6'4" 215lb, and has a knack for nuances of the position that sometimes are never developed or ingrained. Deep ball is extremely impressive.

140. Drake Jackson, C - Kentucky: I had a few options here, and Jackson intrigued me because of his potential. The Bears feel like a solid fit for him, because Daniels, Whitehair, and Mustipher are all potentially your centers/backups for next year, but Jackson gives you a true C that you can groom as a center. Reportedly intelligent and savvy beyond his years.

175. Thomas Graham, CB - Oregon: This guy is fun. He seems like one of those really obnoxious DBs to play against who always has their nose in the route, makes plays on the ball consistently, and celebrates each time like he just won the game. Even if he's not an immediate contributor at Nickel, he'd be a solid ST presence until he develops.

199. Joshua Kaindoh, EDGE - Florida State: Kaindoh's tape is interesting. He doesn't blow you away with technique, but he has this bizarre magnetism to the quarterback, like a freight train tumbling downhill. I love the impact he lays into his hits, and seems like a high character dude.

I’ve seen Trask mostly go mid to backend of the first on most mocks, and mid 2nd round on simulated drafts. Some trickle down to early 3rd in sim. I’m not sold on Trask, but if he makes it that far (our second) I’d take him provided Bears take an OL in first. There is a chance Bears get closer to top 10 pick, so who knows what will happen.
