Yeah, his body's been broken for 3 or so years now. It can't be easy to walk away from the game when the mind and heart are willing but the body can't function at that level. He's gonna be remembered very well as an all-timer for the franchise.

Loved him in his prime, but his last 3 yrs of playing were bordering on horrid. He got slow quickly and just became a hinderance. Scored some mighty important goals in the playoffs.
Was a very good defenseman the first 2 Cups and a decent one during the 3rd cup run. Glad he was a Hawk his entire career.
The "dynasty" players will start disappearing slow but sure.

sorry to see him broken and retiring ... not exactly the way he wanted to go out I'm sure ... but I think it best for all he recognized his situation rather than trying to hang on skating on 1 leg until he got unceremoniously released
