He is most certainly raw, and his base stats aren't anything to write home about, true.southdakbearfan wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 8:45 amHe is still pretty raw and didn’t have those huge stats in college. I still doubt he will rise to the first. The Cooler King wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 12:01 am
Yet there's rumors of his stock rising into round 1 , but the simulation models haven't caught up.
With receivers, I tend to look at the percentage of team receiving yards they caught, which (in my opinion) gives a better lens through which to view their production. Watson brought in 25.1% of NDSU's total receiving yards in 2019, 35.8% in 2020, and 35.4% in 2021. Over 30% I typically regard as excellent.
The two caveats are that he did it at the FCS level; and that he turns 23 right after the draft and so he broke out a little later than someone like, say, Drake London or Chris Olave. It's possible that the player Watson is today is close to the player he will become. The possible ceiling on his upside may keep him out of the first round. But his size, speed, and athleticism is tantalizing.

I target Watson because I think he's a very good value in R2 and great value in R3.
I would not take him in the 1st, though some team with 2 picks might.

I like the way we runs with the ball after the catch, not too many bigger WRs can move like he does. They used him on a lot of end arounds too because of his skill, you usually see that with the little guys.

PFF
48
for
66, 97, 177, 181, 217, 234
234
for
255, 260
2-39 DE Jermain Johnson
I've seen him as high as the teens, which I think is excessive, but here...
3-66 MLB Troy Andersen
Rated 10 higher
3-71 3T DeMarvin Leal
Rated reasonably at 50something, but fell. 3 Defense to start wasn't the plan, but gotta take what the draft gives.
3-97 C/G Zach Tom
Going to start him at G, because of
5-148 C Alec Lindstrom
5-150 S Markquese Bell
5-177 FS JT Woods
6-181 P Matt Araiza
6-186 WR Isaiah Weston
I finally see one board (not this one) that has figured out he's not going undrafted
6-217 RT Austin Deculus
T just didn't work out. Have to add a veteran backup.
7-255 CB Jaylen Watson
Big, strong outside corner. OK athleticsm, but an excellent scheme fit.
7-260 LB Mike Rose
Can start at SLB, backup at MLB

It’s so hard to find 3T in this class. So far it looks like we’ve come up with
Winfrey who probably doesn’t make it to 39
Logan Hall
Matthew Butler
Haskell Garrett maybe?
That’s basically it. Brutal

I have seen Demarvin Leal fall on several recent mocks, he is a 3T. Travis Jones moves pretty well for his size and could be considered one. He could add some muscle and be another Akeem Hicks too. I find that if you do not take one with one of the 2nd round picks you will probably miss out unless Logan Hall makes it to 71.

This defensive line group as a whole is long on projection but short on production. Honestly, the only guy who impressed me much this year is Stanford's Thomas Booker.crueltyabc wrote: ↑Wed Apr 13, 2022 7:08 am It’s so hard to find 3T in this class. So far it looks like we’ve come up with

With Winfrey, Texas A&M's DeMarvin Leal, and Iowa State's Uwazurike, you can at least figure they played in college at a spot they won't play in the pros. No one is going to play those guys at 0-tech in the NFL. Winfrey is probably the most promising physically. Leal appears to lack enough strength to contribute right away, and Uwazurike is gonna be a 24 year old rookie.
Similarly, asking either of Hall or Air Force's Jordan Jackson to two-gap at 5-tech in the NFL is a bad idea — both should be given roles as penetrators. There's some athleticism to be had here, but you're asking them to do something they didn't do in college (and, in Hall's case, a bit of a one-year wonder).
Butler and Garrett were both 3-techs at Tennessee and Ohio State respectively, with dismal production.

I did another dual draft, this time on PFN and PFF. Luckily Buffalo reached out with trades on both sites and I was able to trade 48 for 57, 130, and 168. PFF gave the trade a B and the overall class an A-.
39. George Pickens WR Georgia (B-)
57. Abraham Lucas OT Washington State trade icon (A-)
71. Brian Asamoah II LB Oklahoma (A)
130. Lecitus Smith OG Virginia Tech trade icon (B+)
148. Cordale Flott CB LSU (A)
150. Noah Elliss DT Idaho (C+) *weird since they had him ranked 130
168. Zaquandre White RB South Carolina trade icon (A-)
186. Josh Johnson WR Tulsa (A+)

I couldn’t believe how this mock fell on PFN mock draft simulator.
No trades
# 39 Drake London WR USC - what are the chances that this guy slides to 39? I had to take him instead of a favourable trade by Cleveland.
#48 Kyler Gordon CB Washington - plug in starter in a position of need
#71 Abraham Lucas OT Washington State - 3rd starter off the board
#148 JT Woods S Baylor - under rated player in position of need
#150 Dare Rosenthal OT Kentucky - it was either him or Matt Arazia the punter.
#186 Mike Rose LB Iowa State - another massively under rated prospect in the draft.
I’d be ecstatic if this was Poles first draft haul

Not sure there's not a bigger need at 39 such as WR or OT. Like 66-181, don't know 217-255. Have to like 260, we went to the same school. He's a real baller, think he can make a contribution.Moriarty wrote: ↑Fri Apr 08, 2022 3:32 pm PFF

I think there are big holes at OT, IOL, and WR but strangely really like this draft. Read some on Tariq Castro-Fields, I'd love to see him land on the Bears. Agree on drafting a QB, no more BS with drafting 1 every 77 years (ok, slight exaggeration). I might suggest another WR or IOL instead of one of the mid-round CBs. Of course, there are always UDFAs who can be brought in.Atkins&Rebel wrote: ↑Sat Apr 16, 2022 4:34 pm Interesting mock with a defense early focus.

If we went shotgun approach to filling defensive holes in the draft, there are still a bunch of fill in FA's who would let us compete with a decent offense.
Taylor projects as a S BTW.
Thornton gives us some serious speed to play with. Addin a possession FA and the WR's are set. Pay a littler for a couple vets on the O line and the offense has a chance.

Wow, any arguments I'd have against drafting those players would be quibbles (not a Belton fan, and drafting kickers). Nice job.Moriarty wrote: ↑Wed Apr 20, 2022 8:49 am PFF

My continued boredom of mock drafts continues. I won't be stopped until there is a real draft

Yeah, I like Waletzko a lot. I think the NFL does too.
I'm not convinced he lasts even to Day 3, but if he somehow slid to 148? Yes please.

Jsut did another dual on PFN and NFL Mockdraft Database. I really wanted to trade down but could not beleive the players that were available on both sites. Would be really stoked if the draft fell this way.
39. Devonte Wyatt DT Georgia
48. Christian Watson WR North Dakota State
71. Abraham Lucas OT Washington State
148. Akayleb Evans CB Missouri
150. JT Woods S Baylor
186. Jalen Wydermyer TE Texas A&M

With some things in better focus, and PFF starting to stand proud of the herd, I thought I'd do another. This feels like my idea of a damned near perfect draft for a team just starting over.
2.39: George Pickens, WR, Georgia. I'm a believer. In Pickens' case, the strong start to his collegiate career far outweighs any concerns about his workload later on. He doesn't just seem like a good WR1 prospect, he seems like a particularly good one for an offense led by Justin Fields.
Trade
2.48 and 6.186 for
2.50, 4.121, 4.135, and 7.233
2.50: Abraham Lucas, OT, Wazzu. Not a big fan of his game at this point, but he's got everything you're looking for in a tackle, including focus, smarts, and attitude. He'll need a year of coaching, which is perfect while our existing question marks get sorted.
3.71: Zach Tom, OL, Wake Forest. The anti-Lucas in a lot of ways. I can't stop seeing a slightly lighter version of Rashawn Slater. With lots of successful experience at center. Would have been happy with him at either second-round spot. In a year, we can lose Whitehair while our line improves dramatically.
4.121: Dominique Robinson, DE, Miami OH. A project, but his upside is absolutely enormous. And it's not like he wasn't productive in college, either, albeit against lesser competition. With a year to work on his game, he should be ready to make a play for a starting role in 2023.
4.135: Tycen Anderson, S, Toledo. Sheer otherworldly athletic talent. Get him into a prominent ST role right away, and get him as much burn as possible in practice. Not sure that he's a starting-quality safety, but if he can hone his instincts a bit, he looks like a great fit for our secondary.
5.148: Neil Farrell, Jr., DT, LSU. In our system, a NT with a ton of pop, good run-stopping stuff, and some pass-rushing juice, too. We have a ton of needs, but DL strikes me as third only to OL and WR.
5.150: DaRon Bland, CB, Fresno State. PFF hated this one for some reason, but Bland is a big, athletic former RB who could be an awfully nice zone/combo corner with some more experience. He's not Jerry Azumah, but he's not not Jerry Azumah.
7.233: Ryan Stonehouse, P, Colorado State. Oh, what the heck. I've been taking Jequez Ezzard late, but then there were unconfirmed rumors of him running a 4.65 at his pro day, and he wasn't even available. here. There was one chance to draft a guy who might just be the best at his position, and it was Stonehouse. Not a huge fan of drafting a punter, but I value ST pretty highly.
Pickens, Tom, Stonehouse, and maybe Farrell should be sure things by draft standards. Lucas, Robinson, Anderson, and Bland could eclipse them if they make the best possible use of their rookie season. That feels like about what the Bears can use this year.

So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.
