I can't see the Lions mortgaging the future but they did in this simulation. To move up from 3 to 2, they gave the Bears their 1.3, 1.13, and 2.43 picks:

3: Will Anderson, DE, Alabama
13: Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia (although hell will freeze over before he falls this far)
43: Matthew Bergeron, OT, Syracuse
55: Andre Carter, DE, Army
65: Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
101: Ricky Stromberg, C, Arkansas
131: Mohammed Diabate, LB, Utah
133: Ronnie Hickman, S, Ohio State
152: Garrett Williams, CB, Syracuse
197: Jordan Travis, QB, Florida State (a mobile backup for JF)
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

No way Skoronski will be there at 21, unfortunately. Has anyone noticed if these draft sims have updated the pool to remove players going back to school?

They keep them pretty up to date in terms of who has/hasn't declared. The computer sims though...all out of whack sometimes.

Another Fanspeak (Fambase), but with 2 major trades this time:

Indianapolis goes in for a QB. Very plausible.
Sent:
Round 1 Pick 2
Received:
Round 1 Pick 9
Round 2 Pick 9
Round 3 Pick 18
Round 4 Pick 9
Round 5 Pick 9
Round 7 Pick 9

Trade Partner: Washington Commanders
Sent:
Round 2 Pick 25
Received:
Round 3 Pick 35
Round 4 Pick 18
Round 5 Pick 18
Round 6 Pick 18
Round 7 Pick 18
Round 7 Pick 34

9: R1 P9 DE Myles Murphy - Clemson
6'5 275 4.6, 2.5 yr starter, AllACC 1st, FreaksList3
40: R2 P9 DE Andre Carter II - Army
6'6 260 4.6, 2 yr starter, FreaksList13
65: R3 P2 1T Mazi Smith - Michigan
6'2 335 4.95, 2 yr starter, AllBig10, FreaksList1
Yeah, that's what I think of our current DL. Justin Jones can finish out his contract, then we'll worry about 3T next year.
81: R3 P18 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
6'5 310 5.1 4 yrs starting
98: R3 P35 TE Darnell Washington - Georgia
6'6 270 4.65, 2 yrs starting
Might not be able to get him this low. We'll see.
104: R4 P2 S Ji'Ayir Brown - Penn State
5'11 210 4.45, 2yr starter, 9 INTs in that time, FreaksList69
With this many picks, no need to count on Eddie's recovery (which I'd still peg as less than 50/50)
111: R4 P9 RB Zach Charbonnet - UCLA
6'1 220 4.45, 2.5 yr starter, 2500 yds & 6.3 ypc last 2
Even with Monty's slight upturn lately, this is a younger, better, cheaper power runner
120: R4 P18 OT Zion Nelson - Miami
6'5 315 5.05, 3 yr starter
Not sure if he's inside, outside, starter, backup, but solid OT starters were gone by 56, and I think they still need options.
134: R4 P32 LB Daiyan Henley - Nevada/Washington State
6'1 230 4.55, 3 yr starter, 5 INT 14 TFL last 2 yrs
Speed and coverage to pair with Sanborn
137: R5 P2 WR Andrei Iosivas - Princeton
6'2 200 4.3, FreaksList15
By draft time, this could be too low, but the bowl and combine will mean a lot for a Princeton prospect
144: R5 P9 3T Zacch Pickens - South Carolina
6'4 305 4.9, 2.5 yr starter
Don't think the upside beyond backup is there, but that's fine for R5
153: R5 P18 TE Zack Kuntz - Penn State/Old Dominion
6'7 250 4.6, FreaksList11
Giant and fast, if the leg is ok. I love huge TEs for the red zone.
160: R5 P25 WR Dontay Demus Jr. - Maryland
6'3 215 4.45*
Enough picks that I can afford a flier on him eventually recovering. On pace for 1200 yds in 2021 before ACL tear.
193: R6 P18 QB Grayson McCall - Coastal Carolina
6'2 215 4.65
217: R7 P2 WR Ainias Smith - Texas A&M
5'9 190 4.4
Another injury flier. Speedy little guy who returns punts.
224: R7 P9 SS Kenny Logan - Kansas
5'11 210 4.55
Cruikshank may or may not be invited back, after an injury plagued season.
233: R7 P18 LB Payton Wilson - NC State
6'4 240 4.5
FreaksList48
I'm baffled at how everyone has him this low. I'll buy that for a dollar.
249: R7 P34 RB Khalan Laborn - Marshall
5'10 210 4.45, 1400+ yds during Ali's mysterious absence
Should beat out Ebner for the PS spot easily, if not challenge for the 3rd HB job

NFL Mock Database
(their trade offers are still broken, so I had to break my rule and make my own offers)

Indianapolis Receives:
2023: Round 1, Pick 3
Chicago Receives:
2023: Round 1, Pick 7
2023: Round 2, Pick 38
2023: Round 3, Pick 85
2023: Round 4, Pick 108
2023: Round 6, Pick 182

New York Receives:
2023: Round 5, Pick 156
Chicago Receives:
2023: Round 6, Pick 205
2023: Round 7, Pick 240
2023: Round 7, Pick 242
2023: Round 7, Pick 254

My Selections
7 Jalen Carter 3T | Georgia Georgia TRADE
If we trade down to 5-7, an elite lineman might make it. In this case, Jalen did.
38 Andre Carter DE | Army Army TRADE
57 Mazi Smith 1T | Michigan Michigan
66 Jarrett Patterson C/G | Notre Dame Notre Dame
85 Zach Charbonnet HB | UCLA UCLA TRADE
103 Owen Pappoe LB | Auburn Auburn
108 Ji'Ayir Brown FS | Penn State Penn State TRADE
133 DeMarvion Overshown LB | Texas Texas
Didn't intend 2, but everything valuable here was something I'd already hit. Iosivas was ranked 171, then went around 117.
138 Connor Galvin OT | Baylor Baylor
182 Ainias Smith WR | Texas A&M Texas A&M TRADE
205 Zack Kuntz TE | Old Dominion Old Dominion TRADE
220 Joe Tippmann OL | Wisconsin Wisconsin
Can back up something, maybe everything eventually
240 Jake Bobo WR | UCLA UCLA TRADE
Slower than our current giants, but maybe he can run routes correctly?
242 Brevyn Spann-Ford TE | Minnesota Minnesota TRADE
254 Clayton Tune QB | Houston Houston TRADE
Sigh. No Grayson McCall this year. This may be my replacement.
258 Khalan Laborn HB | Marshall Marshall

PFF has 7 rounds up.
Be forewarned though:
a) Their Day 3 list of players isn't good
b) They have at least 2 dozen or so completely crazyass rankings that you will have to resist abusing, or end up with a great but totally unrealistic draft
(also don't forget to manually set positional value high on the settings bar)

PFF, and Mori was right: they flat don't list a handful of guys I'd have considered in the last few rounds. But what the heck.

Trades

1.2 (CJ Stroud) to Detroit for 1.4, 1.18, 2.49

We're in the same division as the Lions, but somehow not in the same league.

2.56 (Blake Freeland), 7.193 (Ventrell Miller) to Denver for 3.66, 4.98, 5.130

1.4: Will Anderson, DE, Alabama. Seriously, watch him set an edge and play the run. He can do it.

1.18: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio St. There.

2.49: Gervon Dexter, 3T, Florida. So you like tall three-techs, huh? Here's one.

3.65: Lukas Van Ness, DE, Iowa. Maybe a little cute with the complementary DEs, but if you haven't seen him play, think AJ Epenesa, but strong. And fast. Yep.

3.66: Matt Bergeron, OT, Syracuse. Seems like our kind of developmental tackle. Now let's see if we can develop him. Bonus points for PFF absolutely hating this pick.

4.97: Steve Avila, C/G, TCU. On the fringes of my radar until he destroyed Michigan. I'd very much like to see him destroy more teams in the upper midwest.

4.98: Keeanu Benton, NT, Wisconsin. Probably a tad low, but big guys sometimes drop like this. It'd be fun to watch teams try to run on him and Van Ness.

5.129: Andrei Iosivas, WR, Princeton. Traits, traits, traits.

5.130: Chase Brown, RB, Illinois. I don't get to watch much Illinois football, but I saw Brown throw a block in October, so I like him more than Herbert.

5.143: Jaelyn Duncan, OT, Maryland. Girl with the curl, and I'm not sure he doesn't suck. But I'm not sure that he does, so why not spend a year developing him?

6.161: Joe Tippmann, C/G, Wisconsin. Between him and Avila, we should get at least one good player. That's a start.

6.181: Ivan Pace, LB, Cincinnati. At his size, probably a poor man's Daiyan Henley, but should be a Tasmanian Devil in our D/ST.

So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

I love a lot of wheeling and dealing, and if the Bears got Buckner that would be pretty wild.

Trying PFF again...this time with a shot in the dark as to our top FAs.

Line, line, line, line, go figure:

Kaleb McGrary: $18m
Dalton Risner: $9m
Ethan Pocic: $6m

Da'Ron Payne: $22m

TOTAL: $55m

TRADES

1.2 (Bryce Young) to Detroit for 1.4, 1.18, 2.61, 2024 3rd
Weird to trade with a division rival...but "rival" is pushing it.

1.18 (Tanner McKee) and 4.97 (Tyrique Stevenson) to Washington for 1.21 and 3.52
Uzo and Verse were both there, so I took a chance.

3.65 (Kobie Turner) to Las Vegas for 3.73 and 4.105
Honestly? I want Keeanu Benton and I think he'll still be there in eight picks. If Johnny Newton was on PFF's board, I might've taken him here without trading down.

DRAFT

1.4: Will Anderson, DE, Alabama
Because.

1.21: Felix Anundike-Uzomah, DE, Kansas St.
Gentlemen, I give you a pass rush.

2.52: Rashee Rice, WR, SMU
Might be my favorite WR in the draft right now.

2.56: Mazi Smith, DT, Michigan
Perfect pairing for Payne.

2.61: Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
I'll say it here: he's got more upside than Claypool.

3.73: Keeanu Benton, NT, Wisconsin
Gentlemen, I give you a defensive line rotation.

4.105: Daiyan Henley, LB, Washington St.
Just a million tons of fun to watch. Lots of "Where the fuck did he come from?" moments ahead.

5.129: Chase Brown, RB, Illinois
Because I am contractually obligated as a Bears fan to make this pick.

5.143: Riley Moss, CB, Iowa
Could go three rounds sooner, so this is a nice way to feed the beast.

6.161: Akeem Dent, S, Florida St.
Might've picked him instead of Moss if the value hadn't been so great. We need a compelling backup to Jackson, and while I love DHC, he's getting up there.

6.181: Ryan Hayes, OT, Michigan
Even though I just spent $33 million on linemen, it makes sense to draft another developmental guy.

7.193: Nick Hampton, Pass Rusher, Appalachian St.
So what if he's too small? He's a monster. A tiny little monster. Worth a shot here.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

All of the machinations of what to do with the #2 pick will keep us all a titter throughout the offseason leading up to the draft. Should be a lot of fun.

Fanspeak (Buffalo Fambase)

Trade Partner: Atlanta Falcons
Sent: Round 1 Pick 2
Received: Round 1 Pick 7, Round 2 Pick 7, Round 3 Pick 7, Round 4 Pick 7, Round 4 Pick 11, Round 7 Pick 8

7: R1 P7 DE Tyree Wilson - Texas Tech
6'6 275 4.75, 2.5 yr starter, 14 sacks 27.5 TFL in last 2
38: R2 P7 OT Jaelyn Duncan - Maryland
6'6 320 5.05, 4yr starter at LT
Immediate starter at RT
55: R2 P24 DE Andre Carter II - Army
6'6 260 4.6, 2 yr starter, FreaksList13, 18 sacks 24 TFL in last 2
A pair of starting DEs
65: R3 P2 C Jarrett Patterson - Notre Dame
6'5 310 5.15 4 yrs starting
I suspect he could start immediately, but a 1 yr apprenticeship is fine, too.
70: R3 P7 LB Daiyan Henley - Nevada/Washington St
6'1 230 4.55, 3 yr starter, 5 INT 3 FF 14 TFL last 2 yrs
Fast ballhawk to complement tackling machine Sanborn
104: R4 P2 DL Tuli Tuipulotu - USC
6'4 290 4.95, 19 sacks 29.5 TFL in last 2
Could be a pure 3T or a inside/outside hybrid - with that production & measurables, figure something out
109: R4 P7 RB Zach Charbonnet - Michigan/UCLA
6'1 220 4.45, 2.5 yr starter, 2500 yds & 6.3 ypc last 2
Better, cheaper, younger power runner to complement Herbert
113: R4 P11 FS Ji'Ayir Brown - Penn State
5'11 210 4.45, 2yr starter, 9 INTs in last 2, FreaksList69
I continue to be skeptical that he's around on Day 3, but I already consistently take him 20-50 spots ahead of his ranking
134: R4 P32 1T Keeanu Benton - Wisconsin
6'4 315 5.0, 3yr starter, 7 sacks 15 TFL in last 2
A 4th DL, for doing the dirty work. Reunites w Sanborn in runstopping.
137: R5 P2 WR Andrei Iosivas - Princeton
6'2 200 4.3, FreaksList15, 1650 yds 12 TD in last 2
Lots of physical upside
159: R5 P24 OT Connor Galvin - Baylor
6'7 300 5.05, 4.5 yr starter at LT
He can backup both sides and all the misc carryovers from this year (Mustipher, Borom, Leatherwood, Carter) all can fight to be Whitehair's replacement.
217: R7 P2 QB Clayton Tune - Houston
6'2 220 4.7, 3.5 yr starter, 7600 yds 68% comp, 70/20 TD/INT in last 2
Developmental 3rd QB with good arm, good mobility, great numbers
223: R7 P8 TE Will Mallory - Miami
6'5 245 4.65, 3 yr starter, 538 yds this yr (9th FBS TEs)
Lacks grit, but should be a credible backup pass-catching specialist

If a mod could delete these mocks, that would be nice.

Just for the heck of it, I went to Profootballnetwork.com to see how many draft offers the Bears had for their #1 pick. There were no less than 6 offers. Of course, this doesn't necessarily reflect reality but is fun to do. BTW, I'd take Houston's offer as the best:

1:2, 1:12, 2:2, 2024 1st from Cleveland to Houston, 2024 1st from Houston

The Bears would be insane to turn down an offer like that. And, who knows, there might be additional offers for that #2 pick from a QB hungry team.
Drafts are like snowflakes, no two are alike.

I started that same one.
I countered and offered/accepted less, because that's just deranged.

What's funny is that I simmed a madden season where I got the #1 pick and one of the offers I got was two 2024 third round picks. That's it.

I've mentioned somewhere, I think, that offered trades on nflmockdatabase.com have been broken for awhile.
Whenever they offer you future picks in the deal, there's a bug where the future picks are badly overrated. Like, if you have the 40th pick, the AI might offer you a R7, future R4, future R5, because it adds a ton of value to future picks, instead of subtracting.
What's annoying is I notified them of it (twice) and exactly when it happened and they have a built-in 'trade balance evaluator' for when you offer trades (which still works fine) - and even with all that, it's never gotten fixed.

But, anyway, more generally - as exciting as the number 1 picks is, I think we're getting some runaway expectations on trades already. And the simulators are often to blame.

Remember, in the Trubisky trade :puke: the Bears moved from 3 to 2 to get the top QB available and "only" paid a 3, 4, future 3.
Trading 1 or 2 places just doesn't bring in a lot.
Trading down 9 might - and might be a good move - but you're not getting any of the elite prospects at 10.

I think the #1 pick is different than trading 2-3.
Number 1 pick controls the draft - end of story. You can plan with complete certainty.

If Texans want number 1 I think number 2 and number 12 is fair. Poles might try and squeeze more but I’d take an extra first round pick to move 1 place.

So I decided to try to restrain myself and did a draft sim where I kept things minimal and only moved out if the offer was realistic-feeling. I also played along and modified the Colts trade to reflect value assuming DeForest Buckner would be included as part of the deal.

TRADE // Bears > Colts

CHI receives
- DL DeForest Buckner
- R1 P4 2023
- R2 P35 2023
- R3 P79 2023
- R1 2024

IND receives
- R1 P1 2023

------

R1 P4: Myles Murphy, EDGE - Clemson

This is the logical way to go. With Buckner in hand and likely getting locked up long-term, the Bears need to surround him with viable pass rushers, and Murphy is the clear elite choice. He's primed and ready to make an immediate difference and would be an ideal fit in Eberflus' system.

The Colts part with a defensive great in his prime whose contract comes off the books for their rebuild and net their QB of the future in the bargain.

------

TRADE // Bears > Falcons

CHI receives
- R2 P44 2023
- R3 P76 2023

ATL receives
- R2 P35
- R3 P100

-----

R2 P44 (via ATL): Rashee Rice, WR - SMU

Rice was too much of a draw to pass up for other options. He's got good size - 6'2" 200lbs - and has fantastic length, one of the best GUAGI (go up and get it) targets available in the draft. Has excellent speed as well, and would be a welcome target for a fairly paltry WR room that will look rebound after a lousy year.

The Falcons move up to get help in their pass rush and the Bears move up significantly in round 3 while still getting an excellent weapon for Fields.

-----

R2 P55: Sean Tucker, RB - Syracuse

This pick was done assuming that David Montgomery will not be re-signed, which I expect. Tucker is extremely comparable to Monty in a number of respects, and would similarly tandem well with Herbert. This is high for a running back, but Tucker's explosive capabilities are potentially game-breaking.

-----

TRADE // Bears > Broncos

CHI receives:
- R3 P67
- R4 P105

DEN receives:
- R3 P64
- R4 P131
- R4 P132
- CHI R5 2024

-----

R3 P67 (via DEN): DeMarvion Overshown, LB - Texas

With Roquan gone and the linebacker room not having a lot of wealth, Overshown should be a fantastic candidate to make an immediate difference. He's a long, rangy, and dynamic athlete who has excellent timing in pursuit and a knack for sound tackling. This deal cost a bit of capital, but puts the Bears in much better position to find better talent in this draft.

-----

R3 P76 (via ATL): Dawand Jones, OT - Ohio State

A monster, 6'8" 360lbs, who will compete for a starting job right away, and ideally push Larry Borom into the interior or a swing tackle role while Alex Leatherwood competes for, well, basically anything at this point. Jones is a "we're not fucking around" pick whose specialty is pass pro from the right side, and between he and Braxton Jones, these two ideally will anchor the edges for some time.

-----

R3 P79 (via IND): Ji'Ayir Brown, S - Penn State

Eddie Jackson's status for the 2023 Bears team is very much in limbo, but independent if Jackson returns and/or is healthy, Brown and his former backfield mate Jaquon Brisker made for an extremely dangerous safety tandem for the Nittany Lions, and would have that rapport to work off of in 2023. His highlights are fantastic and scream "cover 2 safety who picks all the shit off." Superb fit.

-----

R4 P105 (via DEN): Ricky Stromberg, OC - Arkansas

Stromberg will have to prove he can handle the finesse aspects of being an NFL center, but he's an immediate upgrade from Sam Mustipher and understudy for Lucas Patrick.

-----

R5 P155: Zack Zinter, OG - Michigan

I saw that Zinter hasn't declared, but assuming he goes, he's a great fit at this point in the draft. I tried to get good value moving back out of this spot, but nothing lined up, so I went with more offensive line depth. Zinter provides relief if Whitehair is a cap casualty or if he and Jenkins continue having issues with their availability, ideally developing into a starter at some point.

-----

R6 P196: Julius Brents, CB - Kansas State

Brents' shortcomings are hopefully ones that good coaching can clean up, but the instincts are extremely promising. He's got great size at 6'4" and plays the ball in the air nicely. If he's still here, he would be a superb addition to the DB room.
