I don't have any problem with Brown for 1yr (if the price is right)

He's pretty plug and play. Push the RT problem out a year into future, when we have fewer needs and 2 R1 picks. (And we could franchise him for another year, if necessary)

I'd be extremely happy to pick up Gesicki and Ngakoue. I'd be happy to grab Brown as well. One year deals are fine with me.

Isn't he done yet? I thought the timer went off last year. Now they're looking at really burnt frozen pizza. lol
Maybe they are making twice baked mayfields?
Don't they need cheese for that? Maybe they should also make a play for Rodgers. :D

Rankins got a 1 year $10.5M contract, no wonder no one sign him for multiple years.

I’m officially over my little melodrama of spamming every thread with my disappointment.

I remain slightly frustrated that I feel Fields is still vulnerable given the O line but what I have embraced is “the process”.

Poles is rock solid in his gameplan and you’ve got to respect that.
He’s “building through the draft” and the first few days of FA have led to believe that only players like Edmunds (clearly one of the best in his position and still having potential to improve) will “get paid” i.e. big contract in first wave.

The others will be second/third wave, shorter contracts.

I get it, good contracts for players past/at their peak won’t happen.
He’s thinking about the future and won’t hamstring the team with deteriorating vets on big contracts despite having incredible cap availability.

Good on him. I’ve got to respect him. I may feel less excited about 2023 but for Poles it’s not about 2023. He’s taking care of the Bears, he’s refusing to be tempted to go all-in.

Just call it a gut feeling but I'd think he would want an agreement that the Bears wouldn't franchise him in a year.

Definitely might.

But that can also be used as a bargaining chip - "If you're going to take away options that are normally available to us, that pushes the contract value down for us. We'll give you X normally, but only Y if we include that clause."

I don't get it.

He seems to be saying that he got help less often than other tackles, that's hard, but it enhanced his rep.

What's the problem?
Did he get a lot of help or something?

He’s saying they put him on an island and gave him no help, and that he’s respected for that.

Brown is a player who logically could have been of interest to the Bears, partly because of his Kansas City ties and GM Ryan Poles' past with the Chiefs. However, he's graded well behind Jones at 35th overall, and far worse as a run blocker. The Bears, after all, have a run-oriented offense.

It's far better to have a fifth-round draft pick who is on his first contract playing left tackle and doing it well enough to stay there than it is to pay gobs of cash for a free agent left tackle who, during a contract year, is having trouble producing better than the Bears rookie.

They're gonna put Sanborn at MLB, and Morrow on the bench.

Well, to be fair to Poles--you do need three, yes? ;)

Entirely serious. It isn't a particularly impactful position overall and my contention is that he isn't better than Sanborn was looking. More proven obviously but we were in a position where we could see what we had with the kid who'll be now riding the pine.

But the comparison isn't Edmunds vs Sanborn really, it's Edmunds and whichever DE/DT we end up with vs Sanborn and a player we could have got with the Edmunds money.
"I wouldn't take him for a conditional 7th. His next contract will pay him more than he could possibly contribute.".

Doubt Poles will want to pay any of those with a long term deal.
If they’re willing to do a 1 year contract then maybe.

Dude.

The plan is to have Sanborn start.

Seriously. Poles and Flus simply want to have THREE good linebackers, instead of just one. Makes sense to me, but he still coulda signed a DT, as well. Both Edmunds and Edwards played MLB...so who plays where will get sorted out in a few months.

I think we play 2 LBs most of the time and Sanborn is a 20% snap count guy.

It provides some competition to Sanborn, it’ll elevate Sanborn to even higher levels of domination

The '21 Colts D, under Eberflus, only used 3 LBs on fewer than 15% of D snaps. However, last year's Bears used 3 LBs slightly more than a third of snaps. Sanborn will not be made useless.

While I was looking this up, I noticed some interesting things. Before Smith was traded, Adams (when healthy) or Thomas played all of the Sam snaps. Then, the game before Smith was traded, Sanborn and Thomas split the Sam duties (not because Thomas was injured). Then the next game Smith is gone and Sanborn is starting at LB. A tell on the trade that I don't believe anyone remarked on at the time.

In his first games starting, Sanborn did not play 100% of snaps as Smith and Morrow had been doing. Instead, about 10%, Sanborn was replaced by DHC as a 6th DB. This had to stop when Jackson and Brisker were injured, but it's clear Bears did not trust Sanborn as a 3 down LB because he can't cover. He'll be great at Sam, and like HH will be able to take over at Mike when called upon.

All the Bears need to do to resume being a top 10 D (they were last year when they defeated Patriots), is replace Smith (done) and replace Quinn (not done).
