Seems redundant to Sanborn, but ok.

Much smaller deal than PFF predicted. Wow.

Maybe they just don’t like Sanborn as much as we do.

I love it. Another smart, productive, furiously hard-working guy for the front seven. And he can cover. I see him as redundant with Sanborn in a ton of very good ways.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

I think we just signed one.The Cooler King wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 11:24 amStill a nice depth piece. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe could play some SAM (even though it's a very part time role)
But yea, wonder what they'll do at WLB.

I just read that Edwards and Sanborn were teammates at Wisconsin. Do they play the same LB position or can they both be starters?

*shrugs*
I mean his OK, decent player, but if you fail to build the trenches you’re wasting everyone’s time.

I'm scratching my head here.
(-)
Terrible measurables,
(+)
yet pretty good production,
(-)
but also very few impact plays
(+)
Decent price
(-)
but seems redundant to Sanborn who was fine and even cheaper

I’d guess this pushed Sanborn to SAM. So he’ll get relegated to 5-6 snaps a game.
Kind of a shrug for me… I’m not convinced Edwards is an upgrade, but it looks like a good contract I guess?

NFL Network said Edwards was a premier off the ball LB

I mean various estimates I saw had him as a near $14m contract.
Sanborn is a nice UDFA story, but I think Edwards is very likely a clear and substantial upgrade.

I wouldn't be surprised if Edwards was your new WILL ... you don't have to run a 4.5 to play WILL in this scheme, you have to be a very sure tackler and be able to play in space.
The money is ridiculously good for the Bears.

With like 8x the number of NFL snaps on tape to grade him on.wab wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 11:39 amI mean Edwards is also a “very nice UDFA story”.The Cooler King wrote: ↑Mon Mar 13, 2023 11:38 am

Running it back with Sanborn was always gonna be a little bit of a risk. This removes that for sure.

Yep, and even if he plays the same position here, he'll have different responsibilities. He's definitely smart enough to move around, and I'd think he'd be worth a look at Will. That's based mostly on my memories of him covering a lot of ground and making a lot of plays.
Even if he isn't already slotted for a starting role alongside Sanborn, he's still a relatively inexpensive upgrade to the LB corps, and that's worth a lot, too. Anyone think Sanborn's getting less than $6.5 million a year when he signs his first unrestricted contract?

What I also like is TJ Edwards thrived under Jonathan Gannon's defense, a coach who has ties to Matt Eberflus in Indy 2018-2020.

I’m shocked at the response here….
You need 2 linebackers on the field on most downs…With Sanborn and Edwards, we have our two primary linebackers.
It should also be noted that we got him for 6 mill per year lol…
