Interesting pick in that he's the first of two CB we've drafted who play better as press/man corners than in zone coverage. What does that tell us? Could either be seen as a potential Safety. EJax is only signed through 2024 and with his cost he's gotta keep producing like he did last year.
If Poles spent a pick on trading up he obviously wanted the kid before someone else took him away and interestingly enough Cincy took DJ Turner/CB at #60. So there's your rationale for jumping ahead of them for Stevenson.

This one's not perfect — physically the closer comp is Trae Waynes — but I saw it as a play style comparison for Stevenson and it's one I can't unsee now.

Position of need. Moving up is not a big deal. A 5th through 7th rounders are trade bait or used on long shots and STers. Will follow this guys progress with interest.

And Poles recouped the pick with his subsequent trade down at the top of the 4th round.

I'm squeamish about this pick.
I get the urgency to trade up and take one, because the run was in full swing and you were fast approaching the cliff of no quality starter prospects remaining.
He wasn't on my list of CB targets, though (although I debated and he didn't miss by much).
His best hope is that this seems to be the best scheme fit for him, so hopefully being here gets more out of him than being anywhere else.
I think I wouldn't have taken one and just sucked it up for another year. However, I also absolutely would have offered enough to land Jamel Dean in free agency and the issue wouldn't have existed.

I was really bullish on drafting a CB high and considered it a top need. This guy wasn't one I coveted but if they have the conviction on him enough to trade up like that they must really like him. I was lukewarm on the pick but the stories I'm hearing about how impressed they are by him early now have me optimistic. From the descriptions I'm getting Peanut vibes about the guy. But maybe more confidence. Like a poor man's Richard Sherman-ish vibe. Confidence is an important trait for CBs.

Luckily the resources are easily there this offseason to get a legit CB1 or draft a guy for that. Poles did inherit a disaster and can't fix it all in one year so some positions are bound to either be addressed half assed or not at all.Moriarty wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 10:14 am I'm squeamish about this pick.

In a perfect world, Gordon takes a leap forward, JJ walks saving $10M in cap space and then we sign a CB1 or draft somebody for the future. This defense needs to cause TOs and we can't have people who don't do that.

I think in a perfect world Poles extends JJ before the season at a reasonable rate and he balls out, creating a few turnovers along the way. Draft picks are always a gamble, and I would rather have more known quantities on the roster than unknown. We have cap space now and we still have some big needs, so I would rather we focus those first few picks next year on DE, WR, C, S, etc.The Marshall Plan wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2023 6:16 amLuckily the resources are easily there this offseason to get a legit CB1 or draft a guy for that. Totally agree. Unless JJ wants insane money (i.e. over 13M) you keep that guy and focus your resources elsewhere. We have 3 quality corners, we may not have a Jalen Ramsey / Revis type, but this defense doesn't call for that. No need to create a NEW need at CB, we have plenty of cap to extend JJ and we should do it before the season starts IMO.LacertineForest wrote: ↑Mon Jun 19, 2023 6:40 amI think in a perfect world Poles extends JJ before the season at a reasonable rate and he balls out, creating a few turnovers along the way. Um, no. We have one decent corner, a second-year corner with a lot still to prove and a rookie who has yet to play a snap.

I'm not being snarky, just pointing out that 2 out of 3 are as yet unknown quantities and we don't know if they're 'quality' or not. I won't be comfortable with our talent at CB until we've seen what they can do.
