Continues to amaze me, yep. I didn't even mind it as an experiment, but now I wonder what those guys could've shown in training camp that led anyone to believe that this was a good idea.
Only silver lining here is the sheer amount of untapped potential on the roster. Not that it's division-winningly great or anything, but I think a good coaching staff gets a ton more out of this defense.
How do you know it’s not division winning great though?
Niners 3 seasons pre Harbaugh 7-9, 8-8, 6-10 with 2 all pro selections, both Patrick Willis.
Niners with Harbaugh - 13-3, 11-5, 12-4 then 8-8 after pissing contest with management last season. Bust QB resurrected, traded for picks, Super Bowl reached, numerous all pro players every year. Division titles and contention with virtually the same roster.
I'm not sure there's enough room in my football-lovin' heart for that much hope.
But good points. On paper, I really do kinda like our defense and think we could generate more of a pass rush with the guys we have on hand. And at full health and with issues addressed that've led to some 100-page threads here, the offense could do some damage, too.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.
Friendship is better than fighting, but fighting is more useful.

That should read "Niners with Harbaugh and Fangio".

So since Harbaugh had him at Stanford and brought him along does he get any credit or was it all his assistant.
Harbaugh gets the credit for the offense. Fangio gets the credit for the defense. Between them they took "virtually the same roster" and turned the team into perennial contenders.
Fangio played his part in Chicago, but Nagy was no Jim Harbaugh. Fangio did it again with the defense in Denver, but their idiot GM never gave him a QB worthy of the name so the offense sucked despite having some talented players. Now he's in Miami where I have no doubt he'll have that defense amongst the best in the league and they already have the most dangerous offense.
Couple a great offensive coach with a great defensive coach and you're going to have a winning combination.
