At this point for me it's DE D'Anthony Jones .
The next Richard Dent?
One can dream. But what a college season.
(BUMPED for Camp.) Who's your underdog, this years Sanborn, you're wanting to see?

I'm interested in seeing how Tyson Bagent looks in camp — I thought he looked pretty good at the Senior Bowl — and Thyrick Pitts, though I'm not sure how many chances he'll get where he is on the depth chart.
But I'm going to pick Jalen Harris. Good size, decent athleticism, pretty good production.

DomRob and Velus - since everyone is writing them off. I think one or both will change hearts and minds this year.

I have a weird feeling about Terrell Smith, moving to S, stepping in due to injury and playing great

Ooooh I like this topic, we can dig it up in Week 13 at the bye and see who got it right.
I think any player suggested has to be 5th round - UDFA.
DP took my first guess. I think Terell Smith moves to S and impresses. My second guess is Jalen Harris. I think he pushes for an EDGE spot and ends up showing some real growth. By the middle of the season he will be a situational pass rusher and will tally a couple of sacks.

Terrell Smith and Jalen Harris are good picks for the defensive side. D'Anthony Jones is too small IMO.
On the offensive side I like Robert Haskins the OT out of USC.

Can it still be Sanborn? I'm still salty he wasn't given an opportunity to continue in the middle...

His play led to signing Edwards and Edmunds. I think we know exactly how the Bears coaches and GM view Sanborn.

I am going to be a party pooper.....no one. I do not see any of the late round/UDFA guys making an impact this season. There are very few spots open for grabs on this roster now for one of these guys to make an impact. RB? Not with the 4 top guys we have. TE? Is there one even on the roster. WR? Aside from the Velus, Pettis, Scott batte there is not much room left. Oline? Who are they pushing out? Secondary? Not unless there are injuries. LB? Nope...... DT? Not with the top 4. DE...only weak spot on the roster, but the top 4 are pretty much set in stone. If Pace brings in a vet DE there will be no chance there either.
I just do not see it happening. I do not even see where all the late round draft picks will make the roster this year, which is a good thing! Pace is doing a real good job of making the overall talent on the roster better without breaking the bank.

I think the word "impact" is pretty relative here. I don't believe anyone is thinking Jalen Harris is going to rack up 12 sacks as a UDFA or Terrell Smith is going to have 5 INTs as a late round pick.Z Bear wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 8:11 am I am going to be a party pooper.....no one. I think Thyrick Pitts is going to make the bottom of the WR depth chart interesting.

OP asked for our underdogs, not the coaches'! And anyway, if he was pencilled in as a starter rather than signing Edmunds then he'd just be a regular dog.thunderspirit wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 7:21 amHis play led to signing Edwards and Edmunds. I'm not sure he qualifies under the Sanborn/UDFA - but I would really love for Velus to make some noise this year and pressure Pettis and ESB off the roster.
ESB is a criminally bad WR who gets playing time because he's a good blocker. Sounds like 1984 football and ESB is Brian Bashnagel - this team needs to continue to evolve into the 21st Century and VJJ has God-Given speed to take the top off. Even in his elder years.

I have this weird feeling that VJJ will be on the PUP list and ultimately IR'd this season before being quietly released next March.wulfy wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 10:22 am I'm not sure he qualifies under the Sanborn/UDFA - but I would really love for Velus to make some noise this year and pressure Pettis and ESB off the roster.

Szmyt and Sewell for me.
But as Z Bear said, impact on this team may be far different than in the past. I don't think anyone will have overall production that will be in line with what Sanborn did last year.
Szmyt it the guy I think can get a starting job and really have an impact.
Sewell on the other had, I can see be a special teams ace and a part-time player at SAM (which is already a part-time role, so he won't have the stats that Sanborn did last year).
So although some of the other guys may chip in here and there, I think these two will have the highest overall production out of the "came out of nowhere" crowd.

That's not true. The Bears had essentially no linebackers. It can be simultaneously true that they love Sanborn, felt they really needed the two FAs AND also needed to draft a LB and loved the value of Sewell where they got him. The connection you're making is made up.thunderspirit wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 7:21 amHis play led to signing Edwards and Edmunds. I think we know exactly how the Bears coaches and GM view Sanborn.

The stuff being said about Velus here is exactly why he qualifies despite being a 3rd round pick.
People have completely dismissed him as being horrible. He's an underdog for real.
I love that his initials are VJJ. "There goes VJJ... lickety-split, for another score!"

Chase Claypool.
A 6'4" #3 WR if Mooney is healthy. What slot corner is going to be able to cover a guy that size?
I like the setup for him this season. Moore is going to draw the attention of the #1 CB and probably some double teams. That's going to create opportunities for the other WRs.

That's my "underdog" as well. For all of his struggles a year ago, imo, it was clear that no one on the roster approaches Jones' speed and quickness.

Agreed that and an off season of getting in synch with JF1 will make a big difference. I also agree he's somewhat an underdog at this point, with so many having dismissed him as a bust trade. The Marshall Plan wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 4:43 pm Chase Claypool.

I'm on board here also. Some have said Scott can play Claypool's position but I expect big things out of him with the addition of Moore and better chemistry with Fields.IE wrote: ↑Mon May 15, 2023 5:44 pmAgreed that and an off season of getting in synch with JF1 will make a big difference. If Scott takes off this WR group is going to be fucking scary and cause nightmares for people.
Scott and Claypool switching out the slot position makes a lot of sense. It would baffle the shit out of the CB3 and cause mismatches all day long.
First CB3 has to cover a giant with Claypool. Then switch. Now he’s got a burner. CB3 won’t know whether to shit or go blind.

The cigarette has been passed from Jay Cutler to Justin Fields.
