I really liked how this turned out with a couple trade downs.

Yeah that turned out great. Are you thinking that safety replaces EJax?

That's a solid four Day 1 starters (Bowers, Odunze, Verse and Van Pran).

Arizona would be such a great trade partner with those two firsts.

Yeah, Ejax has gotta go and that was my thought. After the center pick I went pretty much bpa, but I like the DT from fsu as a rotational piece.

I doubt the Cards would give up this number of picks to move up but if they did; several other trades also. Lots of OL help. The DT from Texas and Billings can rotate on obvious run downs, another massive middle of the line plugger:

So it would never happen this way, but I made a trade with AZ and got both their first, a second and third and their first in '25. I moved back one spot with Washington in the second to get '25 4th as well. At the end of the day I got a very unreal draft, but man is it good:

4 - MHJ WR OHS
9 - Fashanu - OT Penn St.
21 - Jared Verse - DE FSU
35 - Sedrick Van Pran - C Georgia
67 - Kris Jenkins - DT Michigan
75 - Maason Smith - DT LSU
106 - Hudson Clark - Safety Ark.
121 Christian Mahogany - OG BC

Then still have extra ammo in '25 with a first (AZ), second (Panthers) and 4th (Washington).

Not sure I like 2 DT after taking 2 last year, but I like both guys a ton.

As far as the Clark pick goes, I'd actually never do that. I have zero faith in him. But his dad is a good friend of mine who works high up with the Cowboys, so I had to snag him there. Plus we share the same last name, so that has to mean something this time of year in mock drafts when getting into the 4th round.

I would say that Odunze has the same hands and catch radius, a bigger body, but not the long speed that MHJ has.

Anyone sour on Penix watching the Bowl game. I thought he looked very average and fragile.

People were talking about him in the top 10 prior to the game, definitely don't see that happening now. Late first/early second seems about right based on his injury history and body of work.

First game really in his Washington career facing consistent pressure. And it was more constant than consistent. Kinda proud of him for playing the whole game, but he won’t last a quarter behind our line lmao.

I’m not sure not getting Marv is the end of the world. Obviously, if you're in position to get the best, you get the best, but this receiver class frickin deep.

FSU didn’t have a super dynamic passing game, especially after Jordan Travis got hurt, but Keon Coleman is an absolute playmaker. 6’3” 215. And he returned punts, so you know he’s got wheels.

Day 1 was always pretty rich for him, I think. He's probably worth a Day 2 flyer, though.

I was pretty happy with this one.

When I do my mocks I'm deliberately choosing the Raiders as a trade down partner and pretending the 25R1 is Maxx Crosby.

This sorta seems like a “quantity over quality” kinda draft.

PFN. A Fields's Last Stand draft.

1.1 Traded (Caleb Williams) to Arizona for 1.4, 1.27, 2.35, 3.66, 2025 1st.

1.4 Marvin Harrison, Jr., WR, Ohio St. Call me Sir Edmund, but I did it because he was there.

1.9 Traded (Jayden Daniels) NY Jets for 1.10, 3.72, 2025 4th

1.10 Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia. Not too high. Not in 2024.

1.27 Troy Fautanu, G, Washington. At worst, a rookie backup in one of the league's best guard rotations.

2.35 Traded (Cooper Beebe) with 4.106 (Cade Stover) to Tennessee for 2.38, 2025 2nd

2.38 Graham Barton, C, Duke. There's your center.

2.55 Calen Bullock, S, USC. I haven't really studied safeties yet this year, and I know he's raw. But awfully talented.

3.72 Michael Hall, Jr, DT, Ohio St. Not a need. Except that you always need to build the lines. I like Justin Jones a lot, but....

3.75 Adisa Isaac, DE, Penn St. Something had to give, and I ended up looking for DEs who can take advantage of the Sweat Effect.

4.118 Matt Goncalves, OT, Pitt. Super-solid candidate to replace Borom at swing tackle.

5.137 Xavier Thomas, DE, Clemson. Not long, but hyper-explosive.

2025 Picks

Arizona 1st
Tennessee 2nd
NY Jets 4th

If Fields doesn't pan out, we can trade up in the first round and still have three second-rounders, two of them likely quite high, to fall back on.
So much road and so few places, so much friendliness and so little intimacy, so much flavour and so little taste.

QB is the key driver in how the draft will shape up.
I went with this one as a compromise between Spend Little to Nothing on QB and Take a QB at 1.
In order to do that, you have to trade down and accumulate.
I'm not fixated on that QB scenario being the best one, but I don't hate it, either. Spend Little to Nothing on QB is the one I hate. Take a QB at 1 is probably where it ends up and I'm not against that right now. But it's awfully boring to mock. Pick between Caleb and Drake, make one more pick, and then your draft is practically over.
I think a lot of people are obsessed with "Top 10 WR or the draft is a disaster" and I'm not in that category. There's still plenty of big holes and the resource doesn't have to necessarily go that way, in my book.

Still, I don't see a big lack of quality.
You've got arguably the best pure pash rusher in the draft, arguably the best FS in the draft, arguably the best C in the draft, a R1 QB, and a total of 6 guys you would very reasonably hope develop into starters.

Z Bear wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2024 5:47 pm Bears need quality at this point, have enough JAGs on the roster.
I disagree.
The lack of quality depth showed through many times in many places.

At WR, they have 1 star + 2 young guys that maybe can grow into being Not Entirely Useless, and junk. There's 3 jobs wide open.
At IOL, they have 3 guys who have been injury plagued (one a FA) and nothing of consequence behind them. Their best interior backup (Whitehair) is gone.
At DE, as soon as they had an injury, they were back to giving DRob meaningful snaps.
At TE they had good depth in 2023, but Tonyan and Lewis are both likely gone, leaving nothing.

So, here's a mock from me.

It is a build around Justin with a way out mock.

Here I think it is important to pick MHJ in third place. If you're betting on an average QB, it's not enough to have good players around him. We need superstars who do what the QB does elsewhere.

You could also take Newton with the second first-round pick if you think he would be a big upgrade.

There are many examples that show that it makes sense to put a rookie QB on the bench. What I particularly like about J. J. is his age (I'm critical of Bo, for example).

The mock would leave all doors open. If Justin doesn't work, we have a way out and don't have to sacrifice an additional first round pick next year.

End of season/Pre-combine mock.

Round 1
#1: Marvin Harrison Jr. - WR, Ohio State (6’4” 205lbs)
2023: 67 rec. - 1,211 yards - 14 TDs
2022: 77 rec. - 1,263 yards - 14 TDs

Notes: Until a firm decision has been made, I’ll stick with taking the best player in the draft. D.J. on one side. Marvin on the other. Pick your poison.

#9: Dallas Turner - DE, Alabama (6’4” 242lbs)
2023: 50 tkls - 13.5 TFLs - 9 sacks - 2 FF - 1 PDs
2022: 37 tkls - 8 TFLs- 4 sacks
2021: 30 tkls - 10 TFLs - 8.5 sacks

Notes: There’s a lot to like about the edge class this year. I’m high on Turner because of his speed and his experience at linebacker. Jared Verse would be my second option here.

Round 3
#75: Tyler Davis - DT, Clemson (6’2” 300lbs)
2023: 34 tkls - 3.5 TFLs - .5 sack - 1 PDs
2022: 31 tkls - 9.5 TFLs- 5.5 sacks - 2 PDs
2021: 21 tkls - 1.5 TFLs - 1.5 sacks
2020: 14 tkls - 5 TFLs - 2 sacks
2019: 45 tkls - 10.5 TFLs - 6.5 sacks - 2 PDs

Notes: Gervon Dexter played some really nice football towards the end of the year when he was rushing the quarterback, rather than just being out there to eat up space. I like the idea of Billings and Davis rotating at 1-technique, and letting Dexter and Pickens loose as pass rushers.

Round 4
#106: Jaheim Bell - TE, Florida State (6’3” 239lbs)
2023: 39 rec. - 503 yards - 2 TDs
at South Carolina:
2022: 25 rec. - 231 yards - 2 TDs
2021: 30 rec. - 497 yards - 5 TDs

Notes: Bell has never been part of a super dynamic passing offense, but in three years at two schools, he’s been second or third in receptions. He’s super athletic and a legit blocker. He’s also got experience at running back and fullback with 4 career rushing touchdowns.

#121: Malik Washington - WR, Virginia (5’8” 194lbs)
2023: 110 rec. - 1,426 yards - 9 TDs
at Northwestern:
2022: 65 rec. - 694 yards - 1 TD
2021: 44 rec. - 578 yards - 2 TDs

Notes: Prototype slot receiver. Great hands. Great routes. He can finds space in zones. He can run past people, and he can break tackles. He returned 14 kickoffs for Virginia at almost 20 yards a pop.

Round 5
#137: Isaiah Adams - OG, Illinois (6’5” 320lbs)
2023: Started all 12 games - 2 at LG - 10 at RT
2022: Started all 13 games - 12 at LG - 1at LT

Notes: Great size. Versatile plug-and-play lineman. Two-time team captain. 25 straight starts. Hard worker. Played at Garden City CC in 2021. Got offers from over a dozen schools.

61. Zach Frazier OC West Virginia
75. Maason Smith DT LSU
92. Audric Estime RB Notre Dame
110. Blake Fisher OT Notre Dame

Some good guys there. I'd think KC has to put up a 2025 1st to move that much; they gave one up to move from 27 to 10 to draft Mahomes. Wiley has intrigued me. Legette is Alshon V. 2.0 and I say that in a good way. If the Bears move Fields, there's another 2nd rounder and hopefully a 3rd or 4th; can they snag Corley from Western Kentucky?

Wiley has intrigued me. Legette is Alshon V. 2.0 and I say that in a good way. If the Bears move Fields, there's another 2nd rounder and hopefully a 3rd or 4th; can they snag Corley from Western Kentucky?
I went to South Carolina and have seen everyone of Alshon's and Xavier's college games (Deebo Samuel too). Xavier's game is different than Alshon's, it's more like Deebo's. Alshon used head fakes and body positioning to high point balls. Xavier uses his speed and quickness to get open, like Deebo. It's been reported that Xavier has run a sub 4.3 forty and has good quickness in and out of breaks. At a legit 6'3" and 225 pounds, he is a beast physically. To top it off he returns kicks and was used as a gunner on special teams! I really think his stock is about to shoot up after the senior bowl. Best comp to him is DK Metcalf due to his size and speed.

Great info. I've seen him as high as in the '20s in the first round, he may not last much longer than that.
Where are my old Chicago Bears and what have you done with them, Ryan Poles?

Sounds like what Chase Claypool could have been.

I like Legette, I just have some concern about his breakout season coming at age 22. I'd roll dice on him at the beginning of Day 3 myself.

Trade down with NE, trade down again with Atlanta, trade down again with Jax in the first round and snag some future 1st and 2nd rounders. Heavy on the offense:

FSU didn’t have a super dynamic passing game, especially after Jordan Travis got hurt, but Keon Coleman is an absolute playmaker. 6’3” 215. And he returned punts, so you know he’s got wheels.
I like that kid a lot.
