Any of you enjoy hold'em, poker nights in the garage, online poker, and the like? Any of you card counting savants who are barred from blackjack tables across the country?
I love me some Texas Hold'em, and back in the heyday of the craze would attend a number of garage poker nights with coworkers and family. Hasn't happened in a LONG time, though. I get my fix now generally through watching PokerGo and old WSOP clips. Not much of a casino person, but if a movie or show has a casino or felt table or a card game storyline, I am instantly intrigued.
Same thing with pool and bowling. I could watch bowling all goddamn day, especially old tournaments from the 80s and 90s where bowlers were truly weird. I don't quite understand competitive darts, but it's one of those games where when I'm drunk I suddenly remember how to score the board.
Also pocket pool doesn't count; sorry fellas.

Poker is sort of like Golf or Tennis for me, I like to play but not into watching it. Since I moved to FL though I lost my poker crew and no longer get to play, which really sucks. And of course online play is illegal in Florida, because freedom. I rather play with friends than at a casino because at a casino I always feel like I'm the guy at the table that's a dumb ass - that's likely because I am. At least with friends we're all dumbasses.UOK wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 8:16 am Any of you enjoy hold'em, poker nights in the garage, online poker, and the like? This is always a weird thing to tell people, but I've never played poker in my life. I do like cards in general - spades, hearts, rummy, canasta etc...
I think maybe it's because I'm not a gambler I guess. Poker has never really appealed to me.

The keys to poker:
1. Know when to hold them.
2. Know when to fold them.
3. Know when to walk away.
4. Know when to run.
5. Never count your money while you're sitting at the table.
6. There will be time enough for counting when the dealing is done.

Now I just want to watch Rounders again.
Are there any poker movies that are any good? Casino Royale is only kind of a gambling movie, 21 sucked, Casino is awesome but it's more of a mob flick.

Best way to play. Ideally I'll have a set of high quality chips to use in lieu of people bothering with coins, even. No real reason to have anything too nice at the moment. Back in the late 90s/early 00s when hold'em was huge some people had some insanely nice setups for their houses. Felt, high quality playing tables, custom lighting, the works.

Yeah - that was always the game called by the guy who wanted to keep dealing!
I like hold 'em a lot. I really wish I could find a game of relative peers (folks who know how to play but aren't sharks) to get a regular game together. Like at casinos, I'm afraid to try to play on line because there be sharks. In any place with strangers, I'm less afraid of how dumb I am and more about how often the rest of the people play together and, um, "collaborate".

My friends used to have dealer's choice, 7 card stud games like : Follow the queen, High/low Chicago, low in the hole, Baseball...all the time for .25/.50 cash with a $30 buy in limit.
We switched to holdem and omaha for awhile and when someone bought professional chips, but we haven't played since covid

I will kill you if you cut me at the knees. You will drink with me when invited and stay til I say so. We only listen to American Music. I make men nervous with just my presence. I expect an apology if you hold. I throw linemen at QB's. Believe the Lore!

I'm not a gambler at all, however when I was in high school I wound up meeting my wife via poker games I'd have in my basement on the weekends.UOK wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 8:16 am Any of you enjoy hold'em, poker nights in the garage, online poker, and the like? I was on the high school football team. I'd have poker night on Friday or Saturday nights. Get a pizza, rent some movies or put on a game. Invite the guys over.
Well a guy on the team was dating this girl and he's telling me about her.
Turns out she didn't like him that much so I started talking to her.
Convinced her to break up with him and go out with me.
She's now my wife and has been for about 20 years.
Now for the gambling part. My wife likes to bet on the Kentucky Derby and we even went this year in the grandstands and everything. Fantastic time.

Been playing craps online, free games only. I'd like to give it a shot at a casino but the ones around here on really weak on anything except slots. Which don't really turn me on but the old lady has won $500+ and $150+ the last 2 times she's played. Which is about 2 or 3 times per year, we're not big on going to casinos except to listen to bands.

I’ve heard the Derby used to be a blast but has been super lame in recent years.

We had a riot when we were there.
The trick is to sit in the grandstands and not in the mosh pit or whatever they call it. You would not believe how big that place is.
Everything is free except for the cigars and merch. All the food and drinks including booze. I even drank when I was there.
We got there at about 9:00am or so didn't leave until late that afternoon after the big race. Sat by a fun group of people all cheering for the horses. Laughing our asses off the whole time. My wife did a really good job picking horses.
The parking and getting in and out of Churchill Downs couldn't have been easier. Chicago could learn a lot from it.
What they do is have you park in a stadium parking lot. Then they shuttle bus you over. There are always buses running so there's no wait time.
Then when we left the event, after getting shuttle bused back to the parking lot, we just got in the car and drove off. There wasn't any drama about waiting for 1,000 cars to clear out.
