Kmet leaving practice on a cart makes the number of injured, non-practicing Bears 21 total.
Let’s use this thread for general updates on team health specifically as the year goes on, because it’s looking like it’s gonna be one of those seasons.

Did you all notice that any player or coach that was asked about the injuries got nervous and deflective saying we will be OK?
Me thinks the Bears are playing super spy secret Squirrel games.

Seasons a grind, players work hard in the offseason to keep their bodies ready. Players used to use preseason to get in shape, that’s not the case anymore. I think the preseason is now being looked at the time to sharpen your mental game more than physical…My prediction, most of these players are on the practice field come 9-1.

I think that's probably it. They know what they have with some of the starters, they're going to give them some rest in hopes we're close to full strength come week 1 (sad Jenkins sad)cblaz11 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 5:56 am Seasons a grind, players work hard in the offseason to keep their bodies ready. 2023 Preseason Downside prediction:
5-6 wins, never really healthy all season, a constant shuffling.
We're potentially in a position to draft in the Top 5 again, depending on the Carolina team, and probably have a low-teens (or better) pick ourselves.

that doesnt really track with like everything Eberflus has espoused with HITS, but whatever, maybe.BreadNCircuses wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 7:51 amI think that's probably it. You may be right. But it's difficult for me to think that the trend won't continue for whatever reason. Even if you think the trend won't continue, it's difficult to not imagine us losing more games early due to the lack of continuity during the prep for the season.cblaz11 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 5:56 am Seasons a grind, players work hard in the offseason to keep their bodies ready. I'll say it right now. I'm predicting we lose to the Pack in week 1.
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Tremaine Edmunds DID return to practice yesterday - so that's some long-awaited good news.
I've read that Kmet isn't thought to be super serious and the cart was more of a precaution - we'll see.

So many injuries, one thread is not enough to discuss them it seems! UOK appears to have started two.

Statistically I believe the league average is 11.5 guys on the injury report at this time.
So far none are indicated to be serious, at least up until they are, but it’s not like we have a ton more than everyone else.

20ish seems like significantly more than 11.5 to mesouthdakbearfan wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 9:21 am Statistically I believe the league average is 11.5 guys on the injury report at this time.

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with the approach…but I think this is the thought process. Nagging injuries lead to significant injuries or linger all season…I think the goal is to have as few nagging injuries as possible to start the season. Players can knock the rust off, they can’t perform miracles with injuries.

I'm not sure what the report is, but 20 didn't start/finish practice.

Without being on the training staff, and knowing what the specific injuries are, it’s hard to know what is the root cause of this. I know people are going to automatically say it’s the coaches pushing the guys. But maybe our young players are just being ultra careful with bruises and slight muscle pulls.
If everyone was coming up with the same lower leg injuries, then we can blame the conditioning or coaching staff.

The Bears could almost field a half-decent offense with all the guys that are injured if, you know, they weren't actually injured.
QB: Fields
RB: Ebner
WR: Claypool
WR: Jones Jr
WR: Pettis
TE: Kmet
LT: Jones
LG: Jenkins
C: Patrick
RG: Davis
RT: Wright
(I could have included Whitehair at C instead of Patrick, but technically he is fit enough to play albeit at LG.)

A little more color on Kmet - he walked to the golf cart and rode in because it's as hot as Hades here. He could have walked under his own power under normal circumstances. This sounds relatively minor.

That's a relief. For him to get a serious injury just after getting his extension...reminds me way too much of a backflipping catch the football RB who just declared himself healthy and ready to return to football after a multi-year absence.

If everyone is being pushed to practice as hard as physically possible every single play, why would that lead to everyone having the same injuries?Atkins&Rebel wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 10:43 am If everyone was coming up with the same lower leg injuries, then we can blame the conditioning or coaching staff.
This is why moving to 17 games a season was so contentious. This is why Thursday night games giving guys not enough time to recover is contentious. Football is brutal and you can only push the body so far. Some teams have figured this out, some haven't

There have been years where coaches, stressed running, and agility drills and many many players came up with the same lower leg, soft tissue injuries that’s where I was getting atRustinFields wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 11:31 amIf everyone is being pushed to practice as hard as physically possible every single play, why would that lead to everyone having the same injuries?Atkins&Rebel wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 10:43 am If everyone was coming up with the same lower leg injuries, then we can blame the conditioning or coaching staff.

I think it’s the old are you hurt or injured question.
9 guys show on the official espn injury report right now, the nfl is averaging 11.5 on that report for every team with some in the 20’s.
Missing time doesn’t really mean anything as it could be a day off, a slight tweak, a cautious approach to be dinged or a full blown injury.

For the 1st game of 2022, the Bears had 9 guys on IR, 2 questionable, and 1 doubtful. Admittedly most of the guys on IR were not starters, in fact I don't recognize most of their names. Rest guys for this weekend's game and hope a starting OL comes together next week before the 1st game.
