One of the reasons I love Dane Brugler's Beast is the history he does on prospects. I really enjoy learning some of where the guys came from on their way to becoming draft prospects.

The best story I learned this year was that of Rutgers DB Trevor Yeboah-Kodie, who played RB in high school and then went to college at Brown to play lacrosse for four years. He transferred to Rutgers after graduating (Greg Schiano coached his dad at Penn State) and played a full season on special teams after not playing football for four years. And he capped his season off with a blocked punt in the Pinstripe Bowl to help Rutgers win the game.

What stories have intrigued you this year?

I always like to spot the unusual names in the Beast by Dane.

One of my all time favorites was Wesly Mallard of the Oregon Ducks.

This year, it has to be either Storm Duck of Louisville or Level Price of Montana State or Andrew Bloodsaw of Clark Atlanta.

And we can only wait until next year when General Booty (Oklahoma), Panda Askew (Charlotte) and Moh Bility (Rice) are draft eligible.

Are those really players' names? I was too lazy to check.
Where are my old Chicago Bears and what have you done with them, Ryan Poles?

I can't believe someone named their kid General Booty. That's like a bad porn name. Yikes

I hope Bloodsaw is a tight end or rush linebacker. Or maybe a strong safety. That would be fitting.

Storm Duck sounds like Darkwing Ducks long lost partner

Search function suggests you definitely hate him, but haven't told the story.

Lol...ok so when the NFL first started mass adopting my digital playbook stuff I had to travel a lot. I went to Seattle and met with Coach Carroll (amazing person, love him) and got the Seahawks on board. Then took a red eye to Newark and met with Rutgers and got those guys signed up also, so I was 2 for 2 and riding high. The video guys there were really cool, one works for the Browns now. Schiano had left Rutgers for the HC job of Tampa Bay that offseason.
Anyways we became friendly and they gave me one of these rubber wrist bracelet things that had "we are family" printed on it. They gave it to me because I was telling them I was flying direct to Tampa from Newark to meet with the Bucs, and these bracelets were a Schiano thing that he had everyone working at Rutgers wear every day. So they thought it would be funny and a nice way to present myself to him as a "friendly" vendor so to speak. They warned me he was an impossible person to deal with and told me some of the weird stuff he did to the kids that played at Rutgers (like having them bring mattresses to the gym, sleep on the floor, then would wake them at 2am with a blaring horn and have them jump into military style drills). Anyhow, the wrist bracelet gambit did not go well lol.

So I'm in Tampa the next day meeting with their video guy - a super cool guy who had worked there for decades. He's showing me around ahead of our coaches meeting and kinda warns me that I may be in for a difficult time - he didn't want to outright say it, but in retrospect he was telling me the guy was an ahole - a theme was clearly emerging. So, we get to the meeting and the entire coaching staff is in there. I get my iPad synced to their overhead display and start my schpeal. Normally, coaches ask tons of questions - I mean, this was going to change their workflow for creating their playbooks that they had done the same way their whole lives. But this group was dead silent, not a word uttered, not even a friendly hello or anything before I started so it was super awkward. Everyone was afraid to speak because they were literally instructed to stay silent unless "Coach asks them to speak" lol. Schiano sat towards the front, arms folded, frowning and looking pissed the whole time. So I get about halfway through and he just gets up and walks out. The video guy says, Hey Coach, do you have any questions before you go? And he stops, turns around, and walks towards me and says "Yea, I have a question. Where the fuck did you get that bracelet?" And I thought finally my chance to loosen this guy up. So I say, Ricky gave it to me, I was at Rutgers yesterday and the guys all say hello. His face gets bright red, looking like he's going to swing at me or something, and then he just yells (and I mean YELLS), "I'm not your fucking family! " and storms out. All the coaches are kinda stunned and not sure what to do. After a few awkward moments, they all just get up sheepishly and leave the room. The video guys is stunned and I'm like, oh shit what did I do, and he just says to me "You didn't do anything, I've been working here for almost 30 years and worked for really tough guys like Gruden, but never have I worked for an asshole like this guy before" He retired the next year because he couldn't stand the working environment. I caught up with him sometime later and learned that after Schiano got fired he almost got the HC gig at the Browns, but that some folks doing background on him had called him to ask about him and he was free to unload since he was retiring anyways - and that apparently was the reason he didn't get the job. So fuck him.

That's certainly been Schiano's reputation, but to see it corroborated in real-time playback is...something else.
