I could use some recommendations too. Mind you the only streaming service I have is Netflix. I had Amazon Prime for a while, but aside from Jack Ryan and Reacher I couldn't find anything else I was interested in seeing. I can't be bothered paying for lots of services if I'm barely going to use them. NFL Game Pass is expensive enough!
On Netflix:
UK TV feels likes its been in a slump for a few years now. Primetime on the main channels is dominated by the same few tired old shows that have been running for donkey's years and the few new dramas all seem to have a similar vibe and rely on glaringly improbable scenarios. I'm currently watching one called Red Eye starring Richard Armitage (he's in a couple of those aforementioned Netflix shows and played Thorin, the lead dwarf, in the Hobbit movies). He plays a doctor who arrives back in the UK from a conference in Beijing and is immediately extradited back to China on trumped up charges with no legal recourse. When people then start dying aboard the plane it still doesn't divert and land but continues on its merry way to China. It's all so ridiculous!
Mediocre thrillers are a dime-a-dozen these days. I guess I'd just like something different, something inventive, something original.
To be honest I'm just hanging on for the return of Cobra Kai on 18 July. Apparently the final season is going to be 15 episodes rather than the usual 10 and will drop in batches of 5, with the second set at the end of November and the final 5 next year.
On Netflix:
- Bodies - Excellent
- Who Is Erin Carter - Entertaining, but far-fetched
- Fool Me Once - An adaptation of an American book but strangely converted to a UK setting, which doesn't really work because people over here don't tend to own handguns and have gun safes in their homes to keep them in!
- The Stranger - From 2020 so not really recent but a decent thriller with a good cast

For anyone who's missed it, the first 5 episodes of the final series of the greatest show in the last decade is now on Netflix:

While I thoroughly enjoyed the nostalgia of the first 2 seasons, this show fell off a cliff IMO. It became teeny bopper drama/soap opera stuff with the kids and lost it's primary focus on the original cast members and their storyline.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 9:51 pm For anyone who's missed it, the first 5 episodes of the final series of the greatest show in the last decade is now on Netflix:

I'll offer up Presumed Innocent as a damn good series on Apple TV. Which truly surprised me because my wife and I cannot stand Jake Gyllenhall. Him being on the show kept us from watching it until our daughter kept telling us how good it was, then sure enough, it was good! Last episode airs this week.

I've enjoyed it and am watching right now. I'm on the fence about a couple of Viking shows on Netflix. I don't think they have much acquaintance with actual history. I'm all in favor of women having equal rights in the present but honestly doubt Viking women were warriors. Viking Valhalla was mostly about Canute's conquest of England and his Northern Empire; I did some reading and some seemed to jibe with accepted history.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: ↑Fri Jul 19, 2024 9:51 pm For anyone who's missed it, the first 5 episodes of the final series of the greatest show in the last decade is now on Netflix:

I'd disagree with that. Original cast members from the movies have continued to pop up as the series progressed and it's always been a mixture of the old and new.
That said, having just watched the first batch of episodes from the latest season I must admit to being disappointed. There is a feeling that they're treading over old ground particularly with character relationships. Chozen also seems to have devolved into nothing but comic relief and the method for selecting the participants for the Sekai Taikai was lame. It's pretty obvious from the previous seasons who they should be so why not just select them up front? I don't want to give away too much for those who haven't seen it, but if you are going to use a competition to decide on your entrants to a karate tournament surely it would make sense to have the candidates fight each other to figure out who's most deserving and best equipped?
I'm hoping it will all still come together for a satisfying conclusion, but it feels to me like they're overcomplicating matters to stretch it out to 15 episodes rather than the usual 10.

We've been watching quite a few shows over the summer.
Dark Matter - Apple TV
Masters of the Air - Apple TV
Presumed Innocent - Apple TV
House of the Dragon - HBO
The Boys (my wife hates this one) - Prime
I've also went back and started watching American Gods because I never got around to it when it first aired.
Looking forward to the new Dune series and the next season of Rings of Power.
Also - if you haven't watched Dinner Time Live with David Chang, you should. It's the most entertaining cooking show I've watched in years.

Man, I am out of touch. I have been watching Cheers again. The wife realized she liked Rules of Engagement (discontinued CBS comedy). I have Prime, Netflix and some others and nothing seems to trip my trigger. Probably because I am outside more since it has been nice. May dive into some stuff in the winter.

Send your recommendations to our new Aussie punter.
When I get back to the hotel at night, I usually ring my family back home. It's morning in Australia at that point. Or I'll watch a bit of TV before I sleep. I just started Presumed Innocent on Apple TV, but if anyone has recommendations out there, please send them over.

The new Batman series on Amazon is dope AF. Really well done, not sure if you have to be my age (53) to really appreciate it or not because the look/feel of it is very reminiscent of 80's cartoons - but it has an adult story/writing/dialogue to it. I'm absolutely fascinated by this and really hope they do more of these, like a 10 part Superman one would be freaking awesome.

Given we are about the same age (I'm 56) I don't know if "dope AF" the proper expression for us.dplank wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:01 am The new Batman series on Amazon is dope AF. Yes. Seems odd, I didn’t watch it because of that. But it’s fascinating to me, the old 80s style graphics bring me back and a strong comic book vibe - but then it’s done by JJ Abrams and it’s high quality script/story telling IMO.Arkansasbear wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 6:40 pmdplank wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 11:01 am The new Batman series on Amazon is dope AF. Just an aside, getting back into smoking some weed. Of course I had to get the Mac 9. My son got it for me for my birthday. Treading slowly back into it. It is some pretty good stuff. I smoked some Bruce Banner with my son. OMG!! Some of the strongest sativa out there. The stuff is way stronger than the stuff I smoked in the late 70s thru early 80s.

Been catching up on old shows. Vikings, Viking Valhalla, now the Last Kingdom. Dang but it was brutal in England back then. Kind of interesting, each one kind of interprets history as they see fit to make a theatrical show. There is some truth to the shows but no telling how much.

"Norway. They used to be the Vikings love. We saw them off in the end didn't we? And look at that, that's a come down. Once they were Vikings, now look at them. Norwegians. That's a fucking collapse isn't it!"Grizzled wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:31 am Been catching up on old shows. Vikings, Viking Valhalla, now the Last Kingdom. The Last Kingdom sorta threw itself off a cliff as the seasons went on, but the books are all right.Grizzled wrote: ↑Mon Aug 12, 2024 9:31 am Been catching up on old shows. If someone beats me to a really grounded series on Henry I, I'll watch it. But I'm writing it now, so hurry up.

From is really good. I’ve been watching Average Joe on Netflix and it’s decent. Need to try Teacup, supposedly if you like From you should like that one
