Lions QB Jared Goff agrees to terms on four-year, $212 million extension

Less than a week after describing it as a "high priority," Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes got his Jared Goff deal done.

Goff and the Lions have agreed to a four-year, $212 million extension, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Monday, per a source. The new deal puts him under contract with Detroit through 2027 and includes an option for 2028, Pelissero added.

At $53 million per year, Goff's new contract vaults him up the salary charts into second place behind only Cincinnati's Joe Burrow for the highest annual average salary. It also pushes Detroit's offseason spending on extensions beyond $110 million, completing a trifecta of notable deals to keep three core members -- Goff, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and offensive tackle Penei Sewell -- with the Holmes-crafted team for years to come.

Not bad for a guy many considered if not a bust then certainly a disappoint for a first overall pick and nothing more than a stop-gap when the Rams sent him to Detroit in order to get Stafford.

So does Caleb become the first $100M per year player or does somebody else beat him to it?

That is amazing! Goff is not a good QB(he's not bad either, he's the next Kirk Cousins, a guy who will get you no where but keep you from getting a true difference maker). Waste that money on a non elite QB, Detroit. Never stop Lionsing

They were in the NFC championship game and could have won it. The Lions obviously feel he has the potential to do so again and get them to the SB.

No details on how the contract breaks down and what his cap hits will be, but Spotrac are reporting $170m is guaranteed.

They should have won it actually...

Goff is a better QB than he gets credit for.

Correct.

Goff has already been to one Super Bowl, which puts him in the same class as Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton. Not to mention Rex Grossman.

In 4 years when the Lions still haven't done anything but Goff has done enough to sucker some team into another massive contract(hopefully the lions) we can rehash this again just like we have Cousins all these years. Happy about it just like I was Cousins and heard the same things about how good Cousins is when I expressed my joy at the Vikings stupid decision. How'd those Vikings turn out?

The Lions come crashing back down this year. I said it before both Lions games last year and heard from many here how good the lions were. and then the Bears punched them in the mouth both games. The deeply flawed Bears of last season.

They had their flash and fucked it up. Now their house of cards begins the descent. They are gonna be the 2019 Bears. "If we just hadn't double doinked we win the Super Bowl!" Well the Lions can lament for awhile about just missing out in 2023 for the next several years. "Surely they would have beat KC if they had just made it! They beat KC already that year!"

It's sad how much respect some of you give to a piece of shit pathetic franchise who has done NOTHING. A division rival no less. If there is a team to fear in the north for us, it's the Packers. The Lions finish 3rd next season.

Here's Goff's contract breakdown:

2024
Cap Hit: $27.211m (10.65%)
Cash: $80.611m
Dead Cap: $123.611m

2025
Cap Hit: $32.61m (11.93%)
Cash: $18m
Dead Cap: $96.4m

2026
Cap Hit: $69.6m (23.80%)
Cash: $55m
Dead Cap: $63.8m

2027
Cap Hit: $54.6m (17.45%)
Cash: $40m
Dead Cap: $29.2m

2028
Cap Hit: $61.6m (18.40%)
Cash: $47m
Dead Cap: $14.6m

That cap hit in 2026 is brutal. If Goff performs well you have to think they'll probably look to restructure at that point to at least even out the cap hits a bit. Having one player taking up nearly a quarter of your cap space is surely inadvisable.

The Lions are pretty much all in on him for at least the next 3 seasons if not 4. Having come so close to the Super Bowl last season these next two years whilst Goff's cap hits are relatively low are going to be a period when they're really pushing for that elusive championship.
