Read that he is still having the same issues in Pitt practices as he showed with the Bears. Processing. Waiting until a receiver finishes his route instead of leading him:

That's too bad, but he's just getting started there and isn't even getting many first team reps, from the sound of things. Hopefully he gets the coaching he never really got while in Chicago and becomes a long-term starter for the Steelers. I wonder what kind of mentor Wilson is - if he's at all interested, he could really help Justin grow.

I am not too surprised. Not sure he will ever be the kick ass starter people want him to be. I think he will show flashes, more with his legs. He will make the occasional long thru to keep people hoping. I think in college he had it too damn good. OSU's talent far exceeded 90% of the teams they played.

It' a shame because the prospect of the Bears getting the R4 pick rather than the R6 looks a long shot at this point. It looks like it will all come down to whether Wilson gets hurt. I've even seen some claims that Fields is QB3 in Pittsburgh, but I doubt there's been any formal depth chart released at this stage.LacertineForest wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 9:03 am That's too bad, but he's just getting started there and isn't even getting many first team reps, from the sound of things. Yeah, the only way that conditional escalates is long injury to Wilson. Fields winning the job is not happening.

Your best shot at getting a mid-round pick is Ian Cunningham becoming a GM somewhere.HisRoyalSweetness wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 12:27 pmIt' a shame because the prospect of the Bears getting the R4 pick rather than the R6 looks a long shot at this point. If I was Fields I think I’d be trying to get the Steelers to bring back the role is Slash for me. I think that’s the only way he has any sort of career in the NFL. Tebow fought that move claiming he was a QB until it was too late for him. I think Fields has a better shot as a weapon as a return man/RB/WR/wildcat QB than as a QB.
Saddens me to say that as I really wanted him to succeed. It took a lot for me to like a guy from OSU. Good thing is I can go back to hating all things OSU.

I held out as long as anyone here on Fields, and will continue to do so until there's no reason left to do so. Mini camp fodder not withstanding. Confirmation bias is a powerful drug.

Yeah - Processing speed is just the absolute hardest thing to get better at as a QB.Arkansasbear wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 7:15 pmIf I was Fields I think I’d be trying to get the Steelers to bring back the role is Slash for me. I have gone over this before - but I don't think you are right overall on the changing positions being the only way to have an NFL Career.
If you mean -potential IMPACT ? Then you are correct. There is a world where he's an incredible HBack/WR. Basically a better version of Logan Thomas/T. Pryor. Both of whom (especially Thomas) were always pretty good comps for Justin.
But there is no guarantee there - and that career tends to be shorter and for less money.
Marcus Mariotta's career is looking like a particularly viable option - And that is a long and lucrative career.
Backup QB can be a helluva career path

Backup QB is probably the best long term career path in sports besides super star player. You get millions upon millions of dollars without putting a beating on your body. And then you can probably get a media career as a talking head or a job as a coach.RichH55 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:13 amYeah - Processing speed is just the absolute hardest thing to get better at as a QB.Arkansasbear wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 7:15 pm

I dont know if Justin would accept that. He didn't handle the backup role in college or his 1st year from reports. It would be amazing if he would make the switch to some hybrid role. He could be game changing. His legs are absolutely hall of fame level elite.

Rich is back on block UOK, no worries. I'm sure he's trolling me in this thread, and I'm sure that will go without any sort of rebuke, but I will at least do my part sir.

That's more of what I meant. A career in which he week in and week plays and can have an impact. Guys like Mariotta, Sam Bradford, and Chase Daniels have made way more money that he might in the role I was talking about.RichH55 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:13 amYeah - Processing speed is just the absolute hardest thing to get better at as a QB.Arkansasbear wrote: ↑Thu Jun 20, 2024 7:15 pm

Maybe talk to a team about being the primary backup but have some limited role still as a slash type player. I think Kordell Stewart got on the field in such packages when he was the backup. I just remember before I was starting games, it was easier to take not starting knowing I was at least getting on the field for kickoffs and punts.HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:31 amBackup QB is probably the best long term career path in sports besides super star player. Respectfully, I think the NFL has changed quite a bit since Kordell suited up last. Yeah Sean Payton is crazy enough to undermine his starting QB by tossing Taysom out there occasionally but I would be shocked if you could find another coach who'd do that in this day and age.Arkansasbear wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 4:00 pmMaybe talk to a team about being the primary backup but have some limited role still as a slash type player. 41.8 million over 14 years while starting 5 games. Smartest player in NFL histoty imo. Has anyone made more for doing less over such a long period? The Marshall Plan wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2024 10:21 amThat bum Chase Daniel probably made untold millions in the role of backup.HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:31 am

He didn't - but he had options in College - and he knew that with Chicago the job would be his soon enough so screw Foles if he wants to.....HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:31 amRichH55 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 21, 2024 8:13 am

I don't think it edges out Chase's 273 attempts for 41 million. But I didn't double check the math. Any others out there who have become this wealthy for so little work? Who is king of the wealthy scrub QBs?

Mariota has 2118 career attempts and has made 70mil in the nfl. So he's made $33k per pass.RichH55 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2024 3:07 pmAre we going per pass?HurricaneBear wrote: ↑Sat Jun 22, 2024 2:10 pm

Meanwhile Chase has made $264,500 per pass. Marcus cant touch that and I feel dumber for having crunched those numbers.

Sam Bradford career earnings: $134mil. 2967 attempts. He earned $45k a pass, but also the knees and ankles of a man twice his age.

You are my hero @Rusty Trombagent ! Thank you for crunching the numbers and the link!
So it appears Chase IS king after all. Deshaun Watson surprised me the most on that list. I wasn't expecting that one at all.
"Daniel is the NFL’s ultimate con man. For every pass attempt in his career, he’s earned more than most Americans make in three years. That’s just smart business in a rather unforgiving sport. Daniel has had a long illustrious career, rarely ever having to set foot on a football field. What a man!"
Also, JaMarcus Russell....man what a terrible draft pick.
