Non football related but Justin Jefferson has been determined to be the father of a baby girl and ordered to pay child support. Not the most classy guy.

Not that it is that big a deal, but Jefferson was just found to be the father to a child born out of wedlock and he appeared to fight it every step of the way according to what I saw the other night (don't know what he did in that regard, with DNA testing not a whole lot to fight about).

Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy to undergo knee surgery after tests reveal meniscus tear

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will undergo knee surgery and be out indefinitely after tests revealed a meniscus issue, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Tuesday.

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell later told reporters in a previously unscheduled media session that McCarthy has a meniscus tear in his right knee.

"As far as the timeline of the injury, that will be something determined during the procedure, based upon whether it can just be a cleanup or potentially a repair," O'Connell said on Tuesday.

According to Rapoport, McCarthy would only miss a few weeks if the meniscus can be trimmed. If it requires a full repair, McCarthy would miss "many months."

In his NFL preseason debut on Saturday, McCarthy showed promise in a two-TD performance...

"I credit J.J. for obviously being able to continue to play," O'Connell said on Tuesday. "He did not come out of the game from the injury and finished his night with his second touchdown pass. At that point, (he) kind of had reached the snap count I was hoping to get him through the game and at that point was taken out, but at no time did he think it was something that would be something to take him out of the football game and not allow him to play."

One way or another, this injury will interrupt the Vikings' preparation plan they laid out for their rookie QB.

"I had a very clear-cut plan and was going to continue through that with J.J. on the field, getting more and more reps and obviously coming off a performance like he had where we felt strongly about where he was at in his development process," O'Connell said. "You hurt for him in the short term here because he had such a daily process, focus, all those things that I was really looking for in a young player at the position.

"First and foremost, we will get this procedure done, make sure that we're doing the right things for him to have the best possible recovery when that takes place."

Injuries happen all the time. You could have him not play then screw up a play in the regular season resulting in an injury just as easily.

It was a torn right meniscus and the surgeon had to do a full repair rather than trim it. Although the procedure was successful McCarthy's out for the season.

I know he's a R1 QB drafted by a division rival, but you have to feel for the guy. What a way to start your NFL career.

O'Connell had this to say:

"As crushed as I am for our team and the excitement that we had in our building and our fanbase felt the same way, especially after seeing him perform really well the other day at U.S. Bank Stadium, I'm the most crushed for J.J. But, as our fans either have already come to find out or will in the future, this guy is so motivated and so dialed in. As excited as I was to draft him, he's confirmed everything that I hoped to see not only early on through training camp, through his performance last Saturday, but our fanbase and everyone should just be excited about the fact that we've got our young franchise quarterback, I believe, in the building.

Now it's about the unique aspect of continuing a very critical development process for him, where maybe the physical reps aren't going to be there in the short term, but this is going to be a small bump in the road. Other quarterbacks in our league have gone through similar things early on in their journey and came back stronger and better than ever, and that is not only my expectation -- I know that is going to happen for J.J. We will have a great plan for him not only in the quarterback room with those other guys, but a process so him and I can continue to build our rapport and make sure there's a day-today football process, but early on, most importantly, it's going to be about that rehab and the physical aspect of working his way back. I expect him to make a full recovery."

While I don't wish injury on anyone, I do welcome bad news for our division rivals. Sorry Vikings, but looks like you are riding with Darnold and JJ's development will have to wait a year.

I was just watching a CHGO training camp "best and worst" video and at the end they reported Alec Lewis who covers the Vikings for The Athletic was tweeting about an injury to Jordan Addison.



The CHGO guys added that teammates came over to give him high fives and Justin Jefferson patted him on the helmet.

Apparently the Vikings are in Cleveland for joint practices. It's possible the cart was just because of the distance from the field to the facility, but teammates coming over to see him off might indicate something more serious.

I feel for him in that I had the same years ago and it took me 3 years to fully recover. In regards to the Vikes, though, all I can say is "hah hah hah".

The flip side here is that he gets the luxury of sitting his Rookie Year (yes thats better when you dont have to rehab a serious injury) - but It's not 100% positive from our perspective IMHO

I've never heard of someone being out for an entire season with a meniscus tear. I tore mine in late May of one year....I was on the practice field just fine by August. That was 1994, when medical technology wasn't nearly as good as it is today. I understand some injuries are worse than others but something tells me there's more to the story here.

As far as will he be any good or not, it's difficult for me to think he'll be terrible with the type of receivers that the Vikings always seem lucky to get. The problem with McCarthy that I noticed when he was in college is he throws too many wobbly passes, keeping him from hitting receivers in tight windows. If the dude is wide open, he's a great QB. When receivers are covered, he struggles....and this is the NFL we're talking about. Receivers are almost always going to be covered. Just watch the national title game against Washington. He had no trouble hitting the TE on a 5-10 yard route where he's not covered but any receivers with a DB on them....incomplete every time and nearly picked in some cases.

It does seem strange. I've had two meniscus surgeries, the first a little trim which took no time at all to heal and the 2nd a significant bucket handle tear that had to be repaired. But even that didn't take too long before I was back on the field. Is it confirmed he needs a full replacement? That'd be incredibly unfortunate.

I feel bad for JJ. He was playing well up until this. I wouldn't wish a full season of Sam Darnold on anyone as QB1, even a Division rival.
