Bob Love, 81, passed away after a long cancer battle recently. Known as Butterbean for his smooth moves, Love is one of only 4 players to have his jersey retired by the team. He wasn't on the original '66-'67 team but came early in the '68 seasn via trade and averaged over 20 points per game for the team as one of their forwards. He worked for the team after his retirement and was universally loved by all (kind of like the Ernie Banks of the team). RIP, Bob.

He came to a sporting goods store in town around 76-78. Not sure if he had retired yet and can't remember the exact year. I got his autograph. I was a regular Bulls viewer at that time. Love, Chet Walker, Stormin Norman Van Lier, Mengelt, Boerwinkle and some of those guys. I thought it was cool he showed up in our town at a privately owned sporting goods store. I remember him being nice and not put off.

He retired after the '76-77 season but he wasn't on the team at that time. Still, getting his autograph, meeting him, how cool. Chet the Jet. Jerry Sloan. Guy Rodgers. Johnny Kerr as coach. Boerwinkle. I was so excited when Chicago got a franchise, used to listen to games on my AM radio.
