Why not????
Mikefive's theory: The only time you KNOW that a sports team player, coach or management member is being 100% honest is when they're NOT reciting "the company line".

Speculation is that they are giving him the opportunity to gauge his value on the open market. I figure he's a Cowboy before the end of next week.

$3.263m for the right of first refusal.
$5.346m for a 2nd round pick.

The latter was never realistic. The former is peanuts for what Sanborn brings to the table, but other teams could still offer more. The Bears would be better off simply working out a deal with him before free agency starts.

Meh. He was a nice UDFA find - so go get the next one.

He was solid, replace-able for sure, but held his own. Good luck to him.

I suppose that's an option, but from everything I'm reading it looks like they are going to let him hit FA.

Seems like an early overreaction, but time will tell.

Sanborn's 4.73 speed probably has something to do with this. Allen appears to want more speed in his LB corps.

Best of luck to Sanborn. The meatball fan in me likes Bears players who grew up as Bears fans.

Outside of Edmunds, the Bears don't have the fastest of LBs as it is. Edwards is pretty slow too but gets by on his elite instincts. Sanborn had pretty good short area quickness.

He doesn't like the Jonah Jackson thing and he doesn't like letting Sanborn go.

However... if Jackson was a FA, I'd bet my left leg that he'd be one of the top 2 guards available.

It's a new coaching staff, but Sanborn's a good player who provides cover to all 3 LB spots and plays special teams. He made a lot of plays relative to his opportunities and was motivated to succeed as a local lad. They better have a good replacement in mind.

Draft Cory Simon or Jack Kizer. Gritty, slow LBs are easily replaced.

He gave it his all. Later round pick, maybe a FA signing to replace him.

Sanborn didn't play slow. Not every LB has his instincts.

Folk say the same about RBs. Replacing Montgomery hasn't proven to be straightforward.

A later round pick like Noah Sewell? Hmm, it's not always that easy to find decent contributors. Hopefully the new coaches help Poles out.

I like Sanborn and would have liked the refusal level tender for him... But he's replaceable and plays a position that doesn't play every snap.

Really? I feel like his stock has really fallen off a cliff.

And yes I don’t get the Sanborn move at all - a decent player at near zero cost. Solid depth guy, just no reason to create another hole to fill.

I really liked Sanborn, great story, grew a Bears fan and got live every kids wildest dream. Suit up for the Bears and make plays for them, just like you dreamed of doing in the backyard throwing the ball around with your brother. As a UDFA he lasted longer than most. I guess he does meet Dennis Allen's LB standards. Kid has great instincts that let him overcome his speed deficit. He will get picked up somewhere, Dallas maybe as Eberflus is the DC.

I also like the Jackson trade. Just because Nate Davis was a turd who just cashed checks. Doesn't mean ever veteran coming in will be one. He played at a high level for Johnson in Detroit, so I think Ben can get the most out of him again. You know he is a scheme fit from his previous success in it.

After thinking about it a bit, I think the Bears may still re-sign Sanborn after he goes out and finds his true value in the open market. The Bears probably feel they can re-sign him for less then the $3.26M RFA tender. I could see a 2-3 year $2M per year deal for him.

Sounds pretty dumb at least on the surface. Who do we replace him with that's played at the level he has?

Gimme his instincts and competitiveness over his 40 time any day. He plays much faster than 4.7 but it's also where he struggles in coverage.

He could return correct? My understanding is that the 3.5 mill was more then they believe he would get on the open market…let’s see this play out
